Helmet for impact protection
A helmet for protecting a head of a wearer, such as a hockey, lacrosse, football or other sports player. The helmet includes an outer shell and an inner padding disposed between the outer shell and the wearer's head when the helmet is worn. The inner padding includes a plurality of shock absorbers and an interconnector interconnecting the shock absorbers, each shock absorber being deformable in response to a rotational impact on the helmet such that an outer part of the shock absorber moves relative to an inner part of the shock absorber in a direction tangential to an angular movement of the outer shell due to the rotational impact.
1. A helmet for protecting a head of a wearer, the helmet comprising:
an outer shell; and
padding configured to be disposed between the outer shell and the wearer's head, the padding comprising:
an outer part connected to the outer shell; and
ii) an inner part configured to face the wearer's head, the inner part of the padding comprising a plurality of rotational impact protection pads that are spaced from one another and arranged so that the plurality of rotational impact protection pads are oriented towards different areas of the head of the wearer when the helmet is worn, each rotational impact protection pad being separately connected to the outer part of the padding by at least one connector such that each rotational impact protection pad is movable relative to the outer part of the padding by sliding against the outer part of the padding in response to a rotational impact on the helmet,
wherein:
each rotational impact protection pad comprise a first shock absorbing material;
the outer part of the padding comprises a second shock absorbing material different from the first shock absorbing material; and
the first shock absorbing material comprises a fluid contained within a container.

The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of rotational impact protection pads includes four rotational impact protection pads, wherein, when the helmet is worn, the rotational impact protection pads are arranged to be distributed around the wearer's head such that one of the rotational impact protection pads is located to engage a front region of the wearer's head, one of the rotational impact protection pads is located to engage a left side region of the wearer's head, one of the rotational impact protection pads is located to engage a right side region of the wearer's head, and one of the rotational impact protection pads is located to engage a back region of the wearer's head.
3. The helmet of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of rotational impact protection pads further includes a rotational impact protection pad located to engage a top region of the wearer's head when the helmet is worn.

The helmet of claim 1 , wherein, for each rotational impact protection pad, the at least one connector connecting the rotational impact protection pad to the outer part of the padding is at least one of stretchable and bendable to allow the rotational impact protection pad to slide against the outer part of the padding in response to the rotational impact on the helmet.
5. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the container comprises a flexible bag, pouch or other envelope.
6. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a liquid.
7. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a gas.
8. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein given ones of the rotational impact protection pads have different shapes from one another.
9. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein given ones of the rotational impact protection pads have different sizes from one another.
10. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the outer part of the inner padding comprises a plurality of outer pads separate from one another.
11. The helmet of claim 10 , wherein the outer shell comprises a first shell member and a second shell member movable relative to one another to adjust a size of the helmet.
12. The helmet of claim 11 , wherein respective ones of the outer pads are secured to different ones of the first shell member and the second shell member to move relative to one another when the first shell member and the second shell member are moved relative to one another to adjust the size of the helmet.
13. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein each rotational impact protection pad is movable omnidirectionally relative to the outer part of the padding in response to the rotational impact on the helmet.
14. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the helmet is a hockey helmet.
15. A helmet for protecting a head of a wearer, the helmet comprising:
an outer shell; and
padding configured to be disposed between the outer shell and the wearer's head, the padding comprising:
i) an outer part connected to the outer shell; and
ii) an inner part configured to face the wearer's head, the inner part of the padding comprising a plurality of rotational impact protection pads that are spaced from one another and arranged so that the plurality of rotational impact protection pads are oriented towards different areas of the head of the wearer when the helmet is worn, each rotational impact protection pad being separately connected to the outer part of the padding by at least one connector such that each rotational impact protection pad is movable relative to the outer part of the padding by sliding against the outer part of the padding in response to a rotational impact on the helmet, wherein at least one of the rotational impact protection pads has a multi-layer construction comprising a main shock absorption layer and a comfort layer, the comfort layer configured to be closer to the wearer's head than the main shock absorption layer of the at least one rotational impact protection pad when the helmet is worn.
16. The helmet of claim 15 , wherein the outer part of padding comprises a plurality of outer pads separate from one another.
17. The helmet of claim 16 , wherein the outer shell comprises a first shell member and a second shell member movable relative to one another to adjust a size of the helmet.
18. The helmet of claim 17 , wherein respective ones of the outer pads are secured to different ones of the first shell member and the second shell member to move relative to one another when the first shell member and the second shell member are moved relative to one another to adjust the size of the helmet.
19. The helmet of claim 15 , wherein each rotational impact protection pad is movable omnidirectionally relative to the outer part of the padding in response to the rotational impact on the helmet.
20. The helmet of claim 15 , wherein the helmet is a hockey helmet.
