Abstract

A system and method for performing range of motion measurements in an unsupervised manner. A user equipment with one or more cameras may be used with an application on the UE using the one or more cameras to measure range of motion of a user of the UE. The patient may record movement of the part of the body of interest, such as the head. The movement may be recorded in three dimensions (e.g., calculated from two dimensional coordinates of an image) and processed by the application, and the three rotational angles calculated corresponding to the difference between the final position of the head and the initial position of the head at the beginning of the recording. As a result, facial recognition is used to improve monitoring of range of motion during surgical recovery in an unsupervised environment.

Claims (57)

1 . An apparatus for cervical range of motion monitoring, comprising:

a memory having stored thereon instructions for executing an application for unsupervised cervical range of motion monitoring; and

a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to execute the instructions to cause the processor to:

display an interface providing a plurality of cervical range of motion measurement options;

receive a user input selecting one cervical range of motion measurement option of the plurality of cervical range of motion measurement options;

display one or more instructions in response to the received user input, the one or more instructions indicating how to position the apparatus;

monitor a user's adjustment of the apparatus to a substantially upright position using at least a first portion of the user's body, the apparatus configured to display an alignment indicator;

in response to the apparatus being positioned substantially uprightly, continuously update the alignment indicator relative to the user's body to guide the user in positioning at least a second portion of the user's body;

in response to the apparatus being positioned substantially uprightly and at least the second portion of the user's body being positioned based on the alignment indicator, record a video including a plurality of movements of the user by a camera of the apparatus;

calculate one or more cervical range of motion measurements based on the plurality of movements in the recorded video, including a difference between a start of measurement and an end of measurement; and

display a visualization of the one or more cervical range of motion measurements.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

display:

a view of the user; and

the alignment indicator overlaid over the shoulders of the user; and

output a notification when the alignment indicator is substantially aligned to a predetermined position of the user's body, wherein the alignment indicator is generated based on augmented reality.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more instructions includes instructions regarding camera placement including instructions for the user to hold the apparatus in a stationary position with the camera facing the user from the start of recording to the end of recording.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more instructions includes instructions regarding camera placement including instructions for the user to position the apparatus in portrait orientation with the camera facing the user.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of cervical range of motion measurement options includes a pain-free cervical range of motion measurement option and a maximum cervical range of motion measurement option.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises the camera and the interface.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the video and the cervical range of motion measurements to a separate server for review.

8 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive, from the separate server, a request for additional actions to be performed by the user.

9 . An apparatus for range of motion monitoring, comprising:

a memory having stored thereon instructions for executing an application for reviewing data from an unsupervised range of motion monitoring procedure; and

a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to execute the instructions to cause the processor to:

receive the data from the unsupervised range of motion monitoring procedure, the unsupervised range of motion monitoring procedure comprising:

displaying an interface providing a plurality of range of motion measurement options;

receiving a user input selecting one range of motion measurement option of the plurality of range of motion measurement options;

displaying one or more instructions in response to the received user input, the one or more instructions indicating how to position the apparatus;

monitoring a user's adjustment of the apparatus to a substantially upright position using at least a first portion of the user's body, the apparatus configured to display an alignment indicator;

in response to the apparatus being positioned substantially uprightly, continuously updating the alignment indicator relative to the user's body to guide the user in positioning at least a second portion of the user's body;

in response to the apparatus being positioned substantially uprightly and at least the second portion of the user's body being positioned based on the alignment indicator, recording a video including a plurality of movements of the user by a camera of the apparatus;

calculating one or more range of motion measurements based on the plurality of movements in the recorded video, including a difference between a start of measurement and an end of measurement; and

displaying a visualization of the one or more range of motion measurements;

output, to a display in communication with the processor, a screen display comprising:

the video; and

the range of motion measurements; and

receive a second user input including feedback related to the video or the range of motion measurements.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the video, the range of motion measurements, and the feedback to an additional apparatus of the user.

11 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the feedback includes instructions related to an additional range of motion monitoring procedure.

12 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the range of motion measurements include a graphical representation of the range of motion measurements.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive a third user input selecting a location within the graphical representation and navigate to a time stamp of the video corresponding to the selected location.

14 . A method of an unsupervised cervical range of motion monitoring procedure, comprising:

displaying an interface providing a plurality of cervical range of motion measurement options;

receiving a user input selecting one cervical range of motion measurement option of the plurality of cervical range of motion measurement options;

displaying one or more instructions in response to the received user input, the one or more instructions indicating how to position an apparatus;

monitoring a user's adjustment of the apparatus to a substantially upright position using at least a first portion of the user's body, the apparatus configured to display an alignment indicator;

in response to the apparatus being positioned substantially uprightly, configuring the alignment indicator to be continuously updated to guide the user in positioning at least a second portion of the user's body;
