Abstract

An orthopedic stabilization device is provided having a first button and a suture. The first button includes a base portion and a locking loop extending from a distal surface thereof, and a locking member slidably receiving the locking loop. At least a portion of the suture extends through the locking loop superior the locking member in the axial direction and at least a portion of the suture extends through the locking loop inferior the locking member in the axial direction such that a portion of said suture is frictionally retainable between said locking member and said locking loop when the suture is tensioned. The device may include a second button with the suture disposed between the first and second buttons such that the suture may be held in tension therebetween.

Claims (23)

1. An orthopedic button comprising:

a base portion having a proximal surface, a distal surface, first and second openings extending therethrough and an intermediate area extending between the first and second openings;

a locking loop extending from the distal surface of the base portion in an axial direction and defining an opening, the locking loop having a width and a depth; and

a locking member having an aperture sized to receive the locking loop such that the locking member is slidably engageable therewith, and wherein a width of the aperture is a maximum of 15% greater than the width of the locking loop and wherein a depth of the aperture is a maximum of 15% greater than the depth of the locking loop.

2. The orthopedic button of claim 1 wherein the locking loop is a substantially U-shaped arch.

3. A device comprising:

the orthopedic button of claim 1 ; and

a suture, wherein at least a portion of the suture extends through the opening of the locking loop superior the locking member in the axial direction and at least a portion of the suture extends through the opening of the locking loop inferior the locking member in the axial direction such that a portion of the suture is frictionally retainable between the locking member and the locking loop when the portion of the suture extends through the opening.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein a portion of the suture extends through the first and second openings of the orthopedic button to thereby form a loop around the intermediate area.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the intermediate area and adjacent the first and second openings comprise filleted surfaces that contact the suture when the suture is tensioned around the intermediate area.

6. The device of claim 3 , wherein the aperture of the locking member is sized such that there is an allowance between an outer surface of the locking loop and the locking member sufficient to permit passage of the suture so as to frictionally retain a portion of the suture therebetween when tension is applied to the suture.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the allowance between the aperture of the locking member and the outer surface of the locking loop is less than a thickness of the suture such that the locking member is inhibited from sliding off of the locking loop over the suture.

8. The orthopedic button of claim 1 , wherein the button comprise one or more of a titanium material, a polyether ether ketone material, and a poly-L-lactic acid material.

9. A device comprising:

an orthopedic button having:

a base portion having a proximal surface, a distal surface, and one or more openings extending therethrough;

a locking loop extending from the distal surface of the base portion in an axial direction and defining an opening, the locking loop having a width and a depth; and

a locking member having an aperture sized to receive the locking loop such that the locking member is slidably engageable therewith, and wherein a width of the aperture is a maximum of 15% greater than the width of the locking loop and wherein a depth of the aperture is a maximum of 15% greater than the depth of the locking loop; and

a suture, wherein at least a portion of the suture extends through the opening of the locking loop superior the locking member in the axial direction and at least a portion of the suture extends through the opening of the locking loop inferior the locking member in the axial direction such that a portion of the suture is frictionally retainable between the locking member and the locking loop when the portion of the suture extends through the opening.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein the locking loop is a substantially U-shaped arch.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the aperture of the locking member is sized such that there is an allowance between an outer surface of the locking loop and the locking member sufficient to permit passage of the suture so as to frictionally retain a portion of the suture therebetween when tension is applied to the suture.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the allowance between the aperture of the locking member and the outer surface of the locking loop is less than a thickness of the suture such that the locking member is inhibited from sliding off of the locking loop over the suture.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein the button comprise one or more of a titanium material, a polyether ether ketone material, and a poly-L-lactic acid material.
