Abstract

A prosthetic heart includes a support structure, an actuator member, a plurality of leaflets, and a sealing material. The support structure includes a plurality of struts movably coupled together such that the support structure moves incrementally between a radially compressed state and a radially expanded state. The struts include a plurality of commissure struts. The actuator member is coupled to the struts of the support structure and is configured to incrementally move the support structure between the radially compressed state and the radially expanded state and to automatically lock the support structure in a particular state. The leaflets are coupled to the commissure struts of the support structure and configured to allow unidirectional blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve. The sealing material is coupled to the support structure and includes a plurality of commissure extensions that wrap around and are coupled to the commissure struts of the support structure.

Claims (32)

1. A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

a support structure having a plurality of struts movably coupled together such that the support structure can move incrementally between a radially compressed state and a radially expanded state, wherein the plurality of struts includes a plurality of commissure struts;

an actuator member coupled to the plurality of struts of the support structure and configured to incrementally move the support structure between the radially compressed state and the radially expanded state and to automatically lock the support structure in a particular state;

a plurality of leaflets coupled to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure and configured to allow unidirectional blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve; and

a sealing material coupled to the support structure and comprising a base and a plurality of commissure extensions, wherein the base of the sealing material remains unattached from the support structure, and wherein the plurality of commissure extensions extends from the base and wraps around and is coupled to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure.

2. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein each commissure extension of the plurality of commissure extensions includes a first tab and a second tab, and wherein the first tab is spaced axially from the second tab.

3. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 2 , wherein the first tab is disposed closer to an outflow end of the prosthetic heart valve than the second tab.

4. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 2 , wherein the second tab is larger than the first tab.

5. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 2 , further comprising one or more sutures configured for coupling the plurality of commissure extensions of the sealing material to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure.

6. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of commissure extensions of the sealing material comprises eyelets configured for receiving the one or more sutures.

7. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the sealing material further comprises a base, wherein the base of the sealing material is coupled to the plurality of the struts of the support structure at a location closer to an inflow end of the prosthetic heart valve than the plurality of commissure extensions.

8. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the sealing material further comprises a base, wherein the base of the sealing material is unattached to the plurality of the struts of the support structure.

9. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts of the support structure is movably coupled together via rivets.

10. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of struts of the support structure is pivotably coupled together.

11. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the support structure further comprises a first mount and a second mount spaced from the first mount, wherein the first and second mounts are coupled to the plurality of struts, and wherein the actuator member is rotatably coupled to the first and second mounts.

12. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 11 , wherein the actuator member is configured such that rotating the actuator member in a first direction relative to the first mount and the second mount radially expands the support structure and rotating the actuator member in a second direction relative to the first mount and the second mount radially compresses the support structure.

13. A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

a support structure having a plurality of struts movably coupled together such that the support structure can move incrementally between a radially compressed state and a radially expanded state, wherein the plurality of struts includes a plurality of commissure struts;

an actuator member coupled to the plurality of struts of the support structure and configured to incrementally move the support structure between the radially compressed state and the radially expanded state and to automatically lock the support structure in a particular state;

a plurality of leaflets coupled to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure and configured to allow unidirectional blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve; and

a sealing material coupled to the support structure and comprising a base and a plurality of commissure extensions, wherein the base and the plurality are formed from a single sheet of material, wherein the base extends from the plurality of commissure struts toward an inflow end of the support structure, wherein the plurality of commissure extensions extends from the base and comprises a plurality of tabs, and wherein the plurality of tabs wraps around and is coupled to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure.

14. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of tabs includes upper tabs and lower tabs, and wherein the upper tabs are disposed closer to an outflow end of the prosthetic heart valve than the lower tabs.

15. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 14 , wherein the lower tabs are larger than the upper tabs.

16. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 13 , wherein one or more tabs of the plurality of tabs comprises a trapezoidal shape.

17. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 13 , wherein one or more tabs of the plurality of tabs comprises a half-trapezoidal shape.

18. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of struts of the support structure is movably coupled together via rivets.

19. A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

a support structure having a plurality of struts movably coupled together such that the support structure can move incrementally between a radially compressed state and a radially expanded state, wherein the plurality of struts includes a plurality of commissure struts;

an actuator member coupled to the plurality of struts of the support structure and configured to incrementally move the support structure between the radially compressed state and the radially expanded state and to automatically lock the support structure in a particular state;

a plurality of leaflets coupled to the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure and configured to allow unidirectional blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve; and

a sealing material coupled to the support structure and comprising a base and a plurality of commissure extensions, wherein the base comprises an undulating shape with peaks and valleys, and wherein each commissure extension of the plurality of commissure extensions extends from a peak of the base and comprises a single tab that wraps around and is coupled to a respective commissure strut of the plurality of commissure struts of the support structure.

20. The prosthetic heart valve of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of struts of the support structure is pivotably coupled together, and wherein the actuator member is rotatably coupled to the plurality of struts.
