Abstract

Novel marine lipid compositions comprising triglycerides and omega-3 rich phospholipids are described. The compositions are characterized by providing highly bioavailable omega-3, increased tissue incorporation of omega-3 and reduced concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Claims (21)

2 . A method of improving cognitive performance in a mammalian subject comprising administering to the subject a lipid composition comprising a mixture of phospholipid molecules, having the following general structure:

wherein R1 and R2 are a fatty acid residue or —OH and R1 and R2 are not simultaneously —OH and R3 is a choline, ethanolamine, serine or inositol group and said mixture of phospholipid molecules is characterized in comprising at least 1% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) residues or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) residues at positions R1 or R2, said lipid composition has a lysophospholipid content of from 15% to 60% w/w of said composition, and said composition comprises triglycerides.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mammalian subject is human.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mammalian subject is a companion animal.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is reduced memory loss.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is reduced forgetfulness.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction of short-term memory loss.

8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction in aphasia.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction is disorientation.

10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction in disinhibition.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mammalian subject mammal has symptoms of age-associated memory impairment or decline.

12 . A method of improving cognitive performance in a human subject comprising administering to the subject a lipid composition comprising a mixture of phospholipid molecules, having the following general structure:

wherein R1 and R2 are a fatty acid residue or —OH and R1 and R2 are not simultaneously —OH and R3 is a choline, ethanolamine, serine or inositol group and said mixture of phospholipid molecules is characterized in comprising at least 1% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) residues or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) residues at positions R1 or R2, said lipid composition has a lysophospholipid content of from 15% to 60% w/w of said composition, and said composition comprises triglycerides, and

wherein the human subject has symptoms of age-associated memory impairment or decline.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is reduced memory loss.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is reduced forgetfulness.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction of short-term memory loss.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction in aphasia.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction is disorientation.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the improved cognitive performance is a reduction in disinhibition.
