Abstract

A lateral arm assembly and method of operation includes first and second articulating arms comprising first and second ends, the first ends of the articulating arms are mounted upon assembly to a support surface at separate lateral locations. The first ends each comprise separate pivoting mounting structures for forming a first pivotal connection with the first and second articulating arms. The lateral arm assembly also comprises a roller tube having spaced lateral ends supporting respective end brackets that provide a second pivotal connection to the second ends of the articulating arms. The roller tube supports a canopy coupled to a roller shaft, wherein one of the end brackets further supports a device that drives the roller shaft for furling and unfurling the canopy.

Claims (29)

1. A lateral arm awning assembly comprising:

first and second articulating arms having first and second ends, said first ends of said articulating arms being mounted upon assembly to a support surface at separate lateral locations, the first ends each comprising separate mounting structures for forming a first connection with said first and second articulating arms, said first and second articulating arms having first and second lateral arms coupled to first and second proximal arms by first and second elbows, respectively;

a roller tube having spaced lateral ends that provide a second connection to said second ends of said first and second articulating arms, said first and second articulating arms extending by moving said first and second elbows away from each other, wherein the first and second articulating arms are solely providing support for the roller tube in the extended position; and

said roller tube supporting a canopy coupled to a roller shaft.

2. The lateral arm awning assembly of claim 1 wherein said roller shaft supports a device that drives said roller shaft for furling and unfurling said canopy, said device comprises a drive motor.

3. The lateral arm awning assembly of claim 1 wherein a spring is coupled to a distal arm and a proximal arm of the first articulating arm.

4. The lateral arm awing assembly of claim 1 wherein said second connection on said second ends of said first and second articulating arms are pivotally fixedly attached to said roller tube at least partially via a bracket, the bracket rotationally supporting the roller tube.

5. The lateral arm awning assembly of claim 1 wherein said canopy when in an unfurled or extended position is supported solely by said first and second articulating arms.

6. The lateral arm assembly of claim 1 wherein said separate mounting structures forming the first connection on said first ends of said first and second articulating arms are pivotally fixedly attached to a support structure, respectively, during use.

7. The lateral arm assembly of claim 1 wherein said second connection on said second ends of said first and second articulating arms are pivotally fixedly attached to said roller tube via a shaft of the roller tube and an axle journal.

8. The lateral arm assembly of claim 1 wherein said second connection on said second ends of said first and second articulating arms are pivotally fixedly connected to said roller tube.

9. The lateral arm assembly of claim 1 further comprising first and second springs each coupled to respective first and second articulating arms, said first and second springs providing tension to said canopy during furling and unfurling positions of the awning assembly.

10. The lateral arm assembly of claim 9 wherein said first and second articulating arms further comprise a channel extending along at least a portion of a length of said first and second articulating arms.

11. The lateral arm assembly of claim 10 wherein the channel conceals first and second springs coupled to the first and second articulating arms when said canopy is in a furled position.

12. A method of operating a lateral arm awning assembly, the method comprising the steps of:

providing separate mounting structures for mounting at separate lateral locations of a support surface;

providing first and second articulating arms having first and second ends, the first ends of the first and second articulating arms to be coupled to the mounting structures to form a first connection with said first and second articulating arms and said support surface, said first and second articulating arms comprising first and second distal arms coupled to first and second proximal arms by first and second elbows, respectively; and

providing a roller tube supporting a canopy, the roller tube having spaced lateral ends, the second ends of the first and second articulating arms for supporting the lateral ends, said articulating arms for moving said roller tube away from said support surface as the canopy extends from a furled position to an unfurled position, said first and second elbows moving toward each other as the canopy extends from the furled position to the unfurled position, said roller tube supported solely by said first and second articulating arms when the canopy is in the unfurled position.

13. The method of operating a lateral arm awning assembly of claim 12 comprising providing a drive motor for moving said roller tube.

14. The method of operating a lateral arm awning assembly of claim 12 wherein the providing the roller tube comprises providing a shaft, said first and second articulating arms to be pivotally fixedly attached to said roller tube via the shaft.

15. The method of operating a lateral arm awning assembly of claim 12 wherein the providing the roller tube comprises providing a shaft, and providing an aperture connected to said first and second articulating arms to be rotationally house to said roller tube via the shaft.

16. The method of operating a lateral arm awning assembly of claim 12 comprising providing said first and second articulating arms to be coupled to the support surface, said first and second articulating arms comprising independent structures.

17. A lateral arm awning assembly comprising:

first and second mounting plates mounted upon installation directly to a surface structure at spaced lateral locations;

first and second articulating arms each including a proximal arm pivotably connected to a distal arm at an arm elbow, said proximal arm of each of said first and second articulating arms comprising separate pivoting mounting structures for forming a pivotally fixed connection with said first and second mounting plates, said first and second articulating arms further comprise a channel extending along at least a portion of a length of said first and second articulating arms, wherein the channel conceals first and second springs coupled to the first and second articulating arms when a canopy is in a furled position; and

a roller tube supported by the distal arms, said roller tube supporting a said canopy coupled to a roller shaft, the roller shaft rotationally supported by a bracket supported by the distal arms, wherein said first and second articulating arms comprise independent structures that solely support said canopy in the unfurled position, wherein the arm elbows move toward each other when moving into the unfurled position.

18. The lateral arm awning assembly of claim 17 , wherein said arm elbows move toward each other during furling, and away from each other during unfurling.

19. The lateral arm assembly of claim 17 , wherein said first and second articulating arms comprise a sole support for said roller tube.

20. The lateral arm assembly of claim 17 wherein said distal arms are pivotally fixedly attached to said roller tube via the shaft and an aperture of the bracket.
