Configurable data path for memory modules
View Patent ↗Systems and methods are described to enable a memory device integrated in a memory module or system to disable one or more data bits, nibbles or bytes of the memory device. The memory device can be further configured to disable error or redundancy checking associated with the disabled data bits, nibbles or bytes, to mask errors associated with the disabled data bits, nibbles or bytes, and/or to suppress the refresh of portions of a memory array associated with the disabled data bits, nibbles or bytes.
1. A memory device comprising:

an error controller configured to generate a CRC code for each of the plurality of data nibbles for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is enabled.
2. The memory device of claim 1 , wherein the memory device is a ×8 memory device and wherein the plurality of data nibbles comprises two data nibbles.
3. The memory device of claim 2 , wherein the two data nibbles include an upper data nibble and a lower data nibble, and wherein the plurality of bits comprise an upper data nibble CRC enable status bit and a lower data nibble CRC enable status bit.
4. The memory device of claim 1 , wherein the error controller is further configured to exclude from generation a CRC code for each of the plurality of data nibbles for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
5. The memory device of claim 1 , wherein the error controller is further configured to suppress errors associated with the CRC code generated for each of the plurality of data nibbles for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
6. The memory device of claim 5 , wherein suppressing errors comprises preventing an error alert generated from an error correcting code (ECC) error from activating when the error is associated with a data nibble for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
7. The memory device of claim 5 , wherein suppressing errors comprises preventing an error alert generated from a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) error from activating when the error alert is associated with a data nibble for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
8. The memory device of claim 5 , wherein suppressing errors comprises ignoring an action triggered in response to an error when the error is associated with a data nibble for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
9. The memory device of claim 8 , wherein ignoring the action comprises overriding a blocked write command to the memory array.
10. A memory device comprising:
a memory array;
an input/output circuit coupled to the memory array and configured to input or output a plurality of data nibbles based on a plurality of data strobe signals;
a mode register configured to store a plurality of bits, each bit indicating for a corresponding one of the plurality of data nibbles whether a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is enabled; and
an error controller configured to generate a CRC code for each of the plurality of data nibbles and to compare the CRC code for only those ones of the plurality of data nibbles for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is enabled.
11. The memory device of claim 10 , wherein the memory device is a ×8 memory device and wherein the plurality of data nibbles comprises two data nibbles.
12. The memory device of claim 11 , wherein the two data nibbles include an upper data nibble and a lower data nibble, and wherein the plurality of bits comprise an upper data nibble CRC enable status bit and a lower data nibble CRC enable status bit.
13. A memory device comprising:
a memory array;

a mode register configured to store a plurality of bits, each bit indicating for a corresponding one of the plurality of data nibbles whether a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is enabled; and
an error controller configured to generate a CRC code for each of the plurality of data nibbles, to compare the CRC code for each of the plurality of data nibbles, and to suppress errors generated by comparing the CRC code for those ones of the plurality of data nibbles for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is enabled.
14. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein the memory device is a ×8 memory device and wherein the plurality of data nibbles comprises two data nibbles.
15. The memory device of claim 14 , wherein the two data nibbles include an upper data nibble and a lower data nibble, and wherein the plurality of bits comprise an upper data nibble CRC enable status bit and a lower data nibble CRC enable status bit.
16. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein suppressing errors comprises preventing an error alert generated from an error correcting code (ECC) error from activating when the error is associated with a data nibble for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
17. The memory device of claim 13 , wherein suppressing errors comprises preventing an error alert generated from a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) error from activating when the error alert is associated with a data nibble for which the corresponding bit of the plurality of bits indicates that the CRC is disabled.
