Abstract

A steerable illumination fixture includes an emitting source and a refractive optical system that steers an emitted beam by relative translation of the emitting source against the optical system. The light emitting source may be placed along an optical axis of one or more lenses to produce an output beam along that axis, or translated in-plane (orthogonal to the optical axis) relative to the lenses to produce a steered beam. The optical system may include refractive lenses or mixing channels and/or one or more baffles with apertures. A round, uniform beam results that retains approximately the same power level and beam width as it is steered. A second lens having a diameter equal to or larger than a first lens may be provided and configured with an effective focal plane of the two lenses located approximately at the plane of the light emitting source.

Claims (29)

1. An apparatus comprising a light source, a mixing channel, and an optical system for projecting a light beam,

wherein the light source comprises one or more LEDs with a phosphor conversion layer disposed on a light-emitting surface of the one or more LEDs,

wherein the mixing channel comprises an input opening and an output opening,

wherein the LED with phosphor conversion layer is disposed within the input opening of the mixing channel,

wherein a width of the input opening is less than three times a width of the light source,

wherein a length of the mixing channel is less than three times the width of the light source, and

wherein the mixing channel provides improved uniformity of color and light intensity at the output opening compared to the input opening.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the mixing channel also partially collimates the light from the light source.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the length of the mixing channel is less than the width of the input opening.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein an interior surface of the mixing channel is diffusely reflective.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein an interior surface of the mixing channel is specularly reflective.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein an interior of the mixing channel is hollow.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein an interior of the mixing channel contains a transparent dielectric material.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the transparent dielectric material is textured at the input or output openings.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input opening is as small as practicable while containing the light source.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input opening is circular in shape.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input opening is rectangular in shape.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input opening and output opening are identical in shape.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the input opening and output opening are different in shape.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the output opening is larger than the input opening.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a shape of the mixing channel forms a compound parabolic concentrator.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a circuit board onto which is attached both the light source and the mixing channel.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a submount onto which is attached both the light source and the mixing channel.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the optical system comprises one or more refractive lens.

19. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the optical system comprises one or more reflective lenses.

20. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the mixing channel is hollow.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein an interior of the mixing channel is specularly reflective.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein the input opening is as small as practicable while containing the light source.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the mixing channel forms a compound parabolic concentrator.
