Abstract

An adjustable suspended seat apparatus having a tuned frequency-tailored damping through stratified seat structure is described. The damping seat structure includes: a first material of a plurality of materials having a first characteristic to provide a first damping effect in a first layer. A second material of the plurality of materials based on a second characteristic to provide a second damping effect in a second layer, the first material or the second material having an adjustable damping characteristic. The suspended seat apparatus includes a seat base configured to have the seat coupled thereto; a suspension system coupled to the seat base, the suspension system comprising: an adjustment feature configured to adjust operation of the suspension system; and a chassis mount coupled to the suspension system, the chassis mount configured to be coupled to a vehicle.

Claims (57)

1. An adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure comprising:

a damping seat structure, the damping seat structure comprising:

a first material of a plurality of materials having a first characteristic to provide a first damping effect in a first layer;

a suspended seat apparatus, the suspended seat apparatus comprising:

a seat base configured to have said damping seat structure coupled thereto;

a suspension system coupled to the seat base, the suspension system comprising:

a shock absorber;

an adjustment feature configured to adjust operation of the suspension system; and

a chassis mount coupled to the suspension system, the chassis mount configured to be coupled to a vehicle, and wherein said suspension system is configured to translate vertical motion to horizontal motion;

said damping seat structure further comprises:

a second material of the plurality of materials based on a second characteristic to provide a second damping effect in a second layer,

the first material or the second material having an adjustable damping characteristic; and

a first bonding material to bond the first material to the second material based on a third characteristic to provide a third damping effect, the first layer bonded to the second layer using the first bonding material; and

said adjustable damping characteristic is manually adjustable via a user input or an automatic adjustment feature controllable based on input from a vehicle monitoring system, wherein said suspension system further comprises:

an integrated air compressor; and

an automatic controller coupled with said integrated air compressor, said integrated air compressor and said automatic controller configured to cooperatively self-level and automatically adjust an initial seat height of said damping seat structure according to a weight of an occupant of said damping seat structure.

2. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said shock absorber includes an integrated air spring.

3. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said shock absorber is a hydraulic shock absorber.

4. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said shock absorber is selected from the group consisting of: a passive shock absorber, a semi-active shock absorber, a fully-active shock absorber.

5. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said suspension system further comprises:

a cantilever assembly coupled with said shock absorber; and

a plurality of pivot arm links coupled with said cantilever assembly.

6. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said chassis mount is configured to be coupled with a body pan of said vehicle.

7. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said chassis mount is comprised of a bracket configured to couple said suspension system with said vehicle.

The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said chassis mount is comprised of a bracket configured to couple said suspension system with said vehicle using an attachment feature selected from the group consisting of: existing vehicle bolt holes, added vehicle bolt holes, a vehicle-specific attachment configuration.

9. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said suspension system further comprises:

a bottom-out prevention feature.

The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 1 wherein said damping seat structure is configured for use in said vehicle selected from the group consisting of: an automobile, a snowmobile, an off-road vehicle, an on-road vehicle, a maritime vehicle, an agricultural vehicle, a recreational vehicle (RV), a sports utility vehicle (SUV), a utility task vehicle (UTV), a commercial trucking vehicle, and a motorcycle.

11. An adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure comprising:

a damping seat structure, the damping seat structure comprising:

a first material of a plurality of materials having a first characteristic to provide a first damping effect in a first layer;

a suspended seat apparatus, the suspended seat apparatus comprising:

a seat base configured to have said damping seat structure coupled thereto;

a suspension system coupled to the seat base, the suspension system comprising:

a shock absorber;

an adjustment feature configured to adjust operation of the suspension system; and

a chassis mount coupled to the suspension system, the chassis mount configured to be coupled to a vehicle, and wherein said suspension system is configured to translate vertical motion to horizontal motion;

said damping seat structure further comprises:

a second material of the plurality of materials based on a second characteristic to provide a second damping effect in a second layer,

the first material or the second material having an adjustable damping characteristic; and

a first bonding material to bond the first material to the second material based on a third characteristic to provide a third damping effect, the first layer bonded to the second layer using the first bonding material; and

said adjustable damping characteristic is manually adjustable via a user input or an automatic adjustment feature controllable based on input from a vehicle monitoring system, wherein said suspension system further comprises:

an integrated air compressor;

an automatic controller coupled with said integrated air compressor; and

an integrated accelerometer coupled with said automatic controller, said air compressor and said automatic controller and said integrated accelerometer configured to cooperatively reduce pressure within said suspension system during high impact scenarios.

12. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said shock absorber includes an integrated air spring.

13. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said shock absorber is a hydraulic shock absorber.

14. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said shock absorber is selected from the group consisting of: a passive shock absorber, a semi-active shock absorber, a fully-active shock absorber.

15. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said suspension system further comprises:

a cantilever assembly coupled with said shock absorber; and

a plurality of pivot arm links coupled with said cantilever assembly.

16. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said chassis mount is configured to be coupled with a body pan of said vehicle.

17. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said chassis mount is comprised of a bracket configured to couple said suspension system with said vehicle.

The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said chassis mount is comprised of a bracket configured to couple said suspension system with said vehicle using an attachment feature selected from the group consisting of: existing vehicle bolt holes, added vehicle bolt holes, a vehicle-specific attachment configuration.

19. The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said suspension system further comprises:

a bottom-out prevention feature.

The adjustable suspended seat apparatus with damping seat structure of claim 11 wherein said damping seat structure is configured for use in said vehicle selected from the group consisting of: an automobile, a snowmobile, an off-road vehicle, an on-road vehicle, a maritime vehicle, an agricultural vehicle, a recreational vehicle (RV), a sports utility vehicle (SUV), a utility task vehicle (UTV), a commercial trucking vehicle, and a motorcycle.
