Abstract

A compression garment apparatus for a body part of an human and/or animal having a flexible backing, attaching means, a segmented flex frame, and a shape memory alloy on the segmented flex frame. The shape memory alloy can be connected to two terminals on the frame forming a circuit. A controller can be connected to the terminals applying current to the shape memory alloy at defined intervals providing intermittent, sequenced, or continuous compression therapy.

Claims (34)

1. A compression garment comprising:

a flex frame comprising:

a plurality of struts; and

a plurality of springs, each spring of the plurality of springs disposed between and connecting adjacent struts of the plurality of struts, wherein each spring of the plurality of springs is connected to a central region of a first strut of the adjacent struts and a central region of a second strut of the adjacent struts;

a wire routed around the plurality of struts such that the wire crosses over itself between the adjacent struts of the plurality of struts; and

a controller configured to apply a current to the wire and, in response, the wire transitions from a first length to a second length shorter than the first length, causing the plurality of springs to contract to decrease an overall longitudinal length of the flex frame.

2. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein the wire comprises a shape memory alloy.

3. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein the wire comprises a shape memory polymer.

4. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to apply a set of stimulation patterns.

5. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein the wire is configured to measure at least one characteristic.

6. The compression garment of claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured to alter the applied current to the wire based on the measured at least one characteristic.

7. The compression garment of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor configured to measure at least one characteristic.

8. The compression garment of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to alter the applied current to the wire based on the measured at least one characteristic.

9. The compression garment of claim 7 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises a physiological parameter.

10. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein each spring of the plurality of springs extends outward from the central regions of the first strut and the second strut of the adjacent struts.

11. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein each spring of the plurality of springs defines an opening.

12. The compression garment of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to compare preset garment dimension values with sensed real-time measured garment dimensions and, based on the comparison, alter the applied current.

13. A compression garment comprising:

a flex frame comprising:

a plurality of struts; and

a plurality of springs, each spring of the plurality of springs disposed between and connecting adjacent struts of the plurality of struts;

a wire routed around the plurality of struts; and

a controller electrically connected to the wire, the controller configured to:

apply a current to the wire and, in response, the wire transitions from a first length to a second length shorter than the first length, causing the plurality of springs to contract to decrease an overall longitudinal length of the flex frame; and

compare preset garment dimension values with real-time measured garment dimensions and, based on the comparison, alter the applied current to the wire.

14. The compression garment of claim 13 , wherein the wire is routed around the plurality of struts such that the wire crosses over itself between the adjacent struts of the plurality of struts.

15. The compression garment of claim 13 , wherein each spring of the plurality of springs is connected to a central region of a first strut of the adjacent struts and a central region of a second strut of the adjacent struts of the plurality of struts.

16. The compression garment of claim 13 , wherein the wire comprises a shape memory alloy.

17. The compression garment of claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to alter the applied current to the wire based on a measured physiological parameter.

18. A flex frame configured to be incorporated into a compression garment, the flex frame comprising:

a plurality of struts;

a plurality of springs, each spring of the plurality of springs disposed between and connecting adjacent struts of the plurality of struts, wherein each spring of the plurality of springs is connected to a central region of a first strut of the adjacent struts and a central region of a second strut of the adjacent struts, and wherein each spring of the plurality of springs extends outward from the central regions of the first strut and the second strut of the adjacent struts; and

a wire routed around the plurality of struts such that the wire crosses over itself between the adjacent struts of the plurality of struts.

19. The flex frame of claim 18 , wherein the wire comprises a shape memory alloy.
