Abstract

Devices and methods for a bullet with a strengthened mouth for improved penetration and expansion. In embodiments, a portion of the jacket is folded to provide double walls at the mouth. In embodiments, the jacket and core are partially bonded and partially separated.

Claims (40)

1. A method of manufacturing a bullet, comprising:

providing a jacket with an open forward end;

inserting a core into the jacket;

partially bonding the jacket and the core with an unbonded region forward of a bonded region;

curling the open forward end of the jacket radially inwardly to form a double walled region of the jacket;

forming a forward-facing cavity in the core; and

forming an ogive shape in a forward portion of the bullet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the partially bonding step comprises separating the jacket from the core from the forward end to a depth, wherein the depth is not an entire length of the core.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the separating is performed by a punch.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the partially bonding step comprises:

applying a barrier to one or more of a forward portion of the core and a forward portion of the jacket, the barrier not applied to rearward portions of the jacket or core, and

bonding rearward portions of the jacket and core.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unbonded region extends to a depth measured from a rear of the bullet, the depth being about 50%-75% of an overall length of the bullet.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of: forming a skive in the jacket extending approximately to a depth, and forming a shear groove in the jacket approximately at the depth.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising insetting a cannelure in the jacket.

8. The method of claim 7 , further insetting the cannelure in the jacket comprises forming an indentation in the core at the cannelure.

9. A method of manufacturing a bullet, comprising:

providing a jacket with an open forward end;

inserting a core into the jacket;

bonding the jacket and the core;

unbonding a forward region of the core;

curling the open forward end of the jacket radially inwardly to form a double walled region of the jacket; and

forming a converging shape in a forward portion of the bullet including the double walled region.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising forming a forward-facing cavity in the core.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the providing an unbonded region comprises separating the jacket from the core to a depth after bonding the jacket and core, thereby defining the unbonded forward region of the core.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the separating the jacket from the core extends to a depth measured from a rear of the bullet, the depth being about 50%-75% of an overall length of the bullet.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the separating the jacket from the core comprises utilizing a punch.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising skiving the jacket.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein unbonding the forward region of the core, comprises unbonding the forward region of the core from at least a portion of a radially inner surface of the jacket.

16. A method of manufacturing a bullet, comprising:

providing a jacket with an open forward end;

inserting a core into the jacket;

providing a partially bonding of the jacket to the core with an unbonded region forward of a bonded region;

forming a forward-facing cavity in the core; p 1 curling the open forward end of the jacket radially inwardly to form a double walled region of the jacket; and

forming a converging shape in a forward portion of the bullet including the double walled region.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the partial bonding of the jacket to the core comprises a mechanical or electrochemical process bonding an entire length of the core to the jacket and mechanically separating the jacket from the core after the bonding the entire length.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the mechanical separating is by punching.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising skiving the jacket.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising insetting a cannelure into the jacket.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the unbound region is directly adjacent to at least a portion of a radially inner surface of the jacket.
