Abstract

A drivetrain component provides an electronically controlled, overrunning drivetrain disconnect, such as a differential with different operating modes. The drivetrain component includes a case and a ring gear connected to the case. A carrier is supported for movement relative to and independent of the case. The carrier includes a differential gear set. The differential gear set has a pinion shaft tied to the carrier, pinion gears mounted on the pinion shaft, differential gears engaging the pinion gears, and differential gear shafts connected to the differential gears. The drivetrain component including a first locking structure, the first locking structure coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a first direction only, wherein the first locking structure does not inhibit carrier rotation in a second direction.

Claims (44)

1. A drivetrain component comprising:

a case;

a ring gear connected to the case;

a carrier supported for movement relative to and independent of the case, the carrier including a differential gear set including a pinion shaft tied to the carrier, pinion gears mounted on the pinion shaft, differential gears engaging the pinion gears, and differential gear shafts connected to the differential gears;

a first locking structure, the first locking structure coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a first direction only, wherein the first locking structure does not inhibit carrier rotation in a second direction; and

the first locking structure includes a strut engaging a notch in the carrier wherein the strut is continuously in a deployed position.

2. The drivetrain component of claim 1 including a second locking structure coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in the second direction.

3. The drivetrain component of claim 2 wherein the second locking structure is a one-way clutch.

4. The drivetrain component of claim 2 wherein the second locking structure is an active one-way clutch.

5. The drivetrain component of claim 2 wherein the second locking structure includes a strut selectively engaging a second notch in the carrier.

6. The drivetrain component of claim 5 wherein the second locking structure includes an actuator moving the strut to one of a deployed position and a non-deployed position.

7. A drivetrain component comprising:

a case;

a ring gear connected to the case;

a carrier supported for movement relative to and independent of the case, the carrier including a differential gear set including a pinion shaft tied to the carrier, pinion gears mounted on the pinion shaft, differential gears engaging the pinion gears, and differential gear shafts connected to the differential gears;

a first locking structure, the first locking structure coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a first direction only, wherein the first locking structure does not inhibit carrier rotation in a second direction;

a second locking structure coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in the second direction;

the first locking structure including a strut, the strut is continuously in a deployed position; and

the second locking structure including a strut and an actuator connected to the second locking structure, the actuator moving the strut to one of a deployed position and a non-deployed position.

8. The drivetrain component of claim 7 wherein the first locking structure includes a pocket associated with the ring gear and a notch associated with the carrier with the strut carried in the pocket.

9. A drivetrain component comprising:

a case;

a ring gear connected to the case;

a carrier supported for movement relative to the case, the carrier including a differential gear set including a pinion shaft tied to the carrier, pinion gears mounted on the pinion shaft, differential gears engaging the pinion gears, and differential gear shafts connected to the differential gears;

a first one-way clutch mechanically coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a first direction of rotation;

a second one-way clutch mechanically coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a second direction of rotation; and

the first one-way clutch includes a pocket in the case, a strut, and a notch in the carrier wherein the strut is always in a deployed position.

10. The drivetrain component of claim 9 , wherein the second one-way clutch includes a pocket in the case, a strut, and a second notch in the carrier.

11. The drivetrain component of claim 10 wherein the second one-way clutch includes an actuator, the actuator moves the strut to one of a deployed position and a non-deployed position.

12. The drivetrain component of claim 9 wherein:

the second one-way clutch includes a strut; and

the second one-way clutch includes an actuator that moves the strut of the second one-way clutch to one of a deployed position and a non-deployed position.

13. A drivetrain component comprising:

a case;

a ring gear connected to the case;

a carrier supported for movement relative to the case, the carrier including a differential gear set including a pinion shaft tied to the carrier, pinion gears mounted on the pinion shaft, differential gears engaging the pinion gears, and differential gear shafts connected to the differential gears;

a first one-way clutch mechanically coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a first direction of rotation; and

a second one-way clutch mechanically coupling the case to the carrier for torque transmission from the case to the carrier in a second direction of rotation;

wherein the second one-way clutch includes a pocket in the case, a strut, and a notch in the carrier;

wherein the second one-way clutch includes an actuator, the actuator moves the strut to one of a deployed position and a non-deployed position;

wherein the actuator includes:

a stator structure;

a translator structure; and

a spring positioned between the translator structure and the strut of the second one-way clutch.
