Abstract

Rotating coalescer elements that maximize the radial-projected separation surface area in a given (rotating) cylindrical volume, where flow to be cleaned is passing axially upward or downward through a separating media of the rotating coalescer element. Various example package assemblies are provided with various types of rotating configurations including cylindrical coiled media packs, frustum coiled media packs, concentric cylinders, coiled metal or polymer films with and without perforations, and/or alternating layers of different materials. The described rotating coalescers may be driven by hydraulic turbine, electric motor, belt, gear or by mounting on rotating machine components, such as rotating engine shafts or connected components.

Claims (71)

1. A crankcase ventilation system comprising:

a housing forming a central compartment and having an inlet and an outlet, the inlet configured to provide blowby gases from a crankcase of an internal combustion engine into the central compartment; and

a rotating coalescer element installed in the central compartment, the rotating coalescer element comprising:

a top endcap,

a bottom endcap, and

filter media contained within a space defined by the top endcap and the bottom endcap, the filter media interfacing with at least one of the top endcap or the bottom endcap such that rotation of the at least one of the top endcap or the bottom endcap is transmitted to the filter media, the filter media comprising a plurality of axial flow channels configured to receive blowby gas from the bottom endcap and to provide separated gas to the top endcap.

2. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the rotating coalescer element further comprises a core coupled to each of the top endcap and the bottom endcap, the core comprising a sleeve centered on a center axis of the top endcap, the bottom endcap, and the core, the sleeve is configured to receive and be coupled to a driveshaft of a crankshaft coalescer system.

3. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein:

the top endcap comprises:

an outer circumferential wall, and

a drain lip contiguous with and extending from the outer circumferential wall;

the top endcap and the bottom endcap are centered on a center axis; and

the drain lip extends towards the center axis and over the filter media.

4. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein:

the top endcap further comprises a plurality of vanes defining a plurality of channels;

each of the plurality of vanes is in confronting relation with the filter media; and

the plurality of vanes are configured to impart a swirl on separated gases provided from the top endcap.

5. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein:

the filter media comprises:

a plurality of flat sheets, and

a plurality of shaped sheets interspacing the plurality of flat sheets;

each of the plurality of shaped sheets comprises a plurality of shaped features; and

each of the plurality of shaped features of at least one of the plurality of shaped sheets cooperating with an adjacent one of the plurality of flat sheets to form at least some of the plurality of axial flow channels.

6. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of shaped sheets is constructed from a metal.

7. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 5 , wherein:

the rotating coalescer element further comprises a circumferential wall extending between the top endcap and the bottom endcap;

the filter media extends around the circumferential wall; and

each of the shaped features of an innermost one of the plurality of shaped sheets is coupled to the circumferential wall.

8. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 5 , wherein:

the plurality of shaped sheets comprises a first shaped sheet; and

the plurality of shaped features of the first shaped sheet comprises:

a first V-shaped feature, and

a second V-shaped feature contiguous with the first V-shaped feature.

9. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 8 , wherein:

the plurality of flat sheets comprises a first flat sheet; and

the first flat sheet contacts a portion of the first V-shaped feature and a portion of the second V-shaped feature.

10. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 9 , wherein the first flat sheet surrounds the first shaped sheet.

11. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 10 , wherein:

the plurality of flat sheets comprises a second flat sheet;

the second flat sheet contacts a portion of the first V-shaped feature and a portion of the second V-shaped feature; and

the first shaped sheet surrounds the second flat sheet.

12. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 8 , wherein:

the first V-shaped feature has a first included angle; and

the second V-shaped feature has a second included angle that is equal to the first included angle.

13. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 5 , wherein:

the plurality of shaped sheets comprises a first shaped sheet;

the first shaped sheet comprises a flat portion; and

the plurality of shaped features of the first shaped sheet comprises:

a first shaped feature contiguous with the flat portion, and

a second shaped feature contiguous with the flat portion and separated from the first shaped feature by the flat portion.

14. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 13 , wherein:

the plurality of flat sheets comprises a first flat sheet; and

the first flat sheet contacts a portion of the first shaped feature and a portion of the second shaped feature.

15. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 14 , wherein the first flat sheet surrounds the first shaped sheet.

16. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 15 , wherein:

the plurality of flat sheets comprises a second flat sheet;

the second flat sheet contacts a portion of the first shaped feature and a portion of the second shaped feature; and

the first shaped sheet surrounds the second flat sheet.

17. The crankcase ventilation system of claim 13 , wherein:

the first shaped feature has a first included angle; and
