Abstract

Disclosed are methods for augmenting progressive meter information presented in association with a gaming device. The methods include controlling a camera on a mobile device using an augmented reality gaming assistance component and enabling a user to employ the camera to capture an image of a game screen display, the image including one or more progressive meters associated with a respective progressive award. The captured image is sent via a network to a server that, for each of one or more progressive meters, determines a location of the progressive meters within the captured image, determines a value for each associated progressive award based on the captured image at each respective location, and determines a progressive rating for the associated progressive award based on the value. Content based on the one or more progressive ratings is received at the mobile device and displayed to the user via a display.

Claims (28)

1. A method of enabling augmented reality gaming, the method comprising:

controlling a camera on a mobile device using an augmented reality gaming assistance component;

enabling a user to employ the camera to capture an image of a game screen display, the image comprising one or more progressive meters, each progressive meter associated with a respective progressive award;

sending the captured image via a network to a server such that, for each of one or more progressive meters, the server determines a location of the one or more progressive meters within the captured image, determines a value for each associated progressive award based on the captured image at each respective location, and determines a progressive rating for the associated progressive award based on the value;

receiving, at the mobile device, content based on the one or more progressive ratings; and

displaying the content to the user via a display on the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a smart phone and the camera is built into the smart phone.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device displays a message to the user on the display of the mobile device instructing the user to aim the mobile device at the game screen display.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the captured image via the network to the server allows the server to determine the location of each progressive meter based on detecting and determining a game title in the captured image and, based on the game title, looking up known positions of progressives meter within the captured image.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the game title is determined via optical character recognition.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the value for each progressive award is determined via optical character recognition.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined value for each progressive award is checked for an out-of-range condition based on known characteristics of the respective associated progressive award and, if an out-of-range condition is detected, the user is prompted via the display on the mobile device to capture a new image of the game screen display.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one progressive rating is based, at least in part, on a position of its associated determined value within a range of expected values.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one progressive rating is based, at least in part, on its associated determined value and a theoretical hold of the game.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the displayed content is based on an average of the progressive ratings.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the displayed content comprises displaying the highest progressive rating of the received progressive ratings.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the displayed content comprises one or more rankings of the progressive ratings.

13. A method of enabling augmented reality gaming, the method comprising:

receiving, at a server via a network, an image of a game screen display captured by a camera on a mobile device, the image comprising one or more progressive meters, each progressive meter associated with a respective progressive award;

for each of the one or more progressive meters, determining by the server: a location of the one or more progressive meters within the captured image, a value for each associated progressive award based on the captured image at each respective location, and a progressive rating for the associated progressive award based on the value; and

transmitting, to the mobile device via the network, content based on the one or more progressive ratings, the content displayable to a user of the mobile device via a display on the mobile device.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the mobile device is a smart phone and the camera is built into the smart phone.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein determining the location of each progressive meter is based on detecting and determining a game title in the captured image and, based on the game title, looking up known positions of progressives meter within the captured image.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the game title is determined via optical character recognition.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the value for each progressive award is determined via optical character recognition.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the determined value for each progressive award is checked for an out-of-range condition based on known characteristics of the respective associated progressive award and, if an out-of-range condition is detected, a new image of the game screen display is received.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least one progressive rating is based, at least in part, on a position of its associated determined value within a range of expected values.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the displayable content comprises one or more rankings of the progressive ratings.
