Abstract

A system for compressing a plate against a surface of a bone is provided. The system includes a fastener and a plate having a body. The body has a first and second longitudinal side that are substantially parallel to each other. The plate defines first slots proximal to the first longitudinal side, and the plate defines second slots proximal to the second longitudinal side. Each slot of the first slots is situated generally opposite a corresponding slot of the second slots. The body is contoured to lie passively against the bone. Further, each of the first slots is configured to receive a fastener, each of the second slots is configured to receive the fastener after the fastener has been looped around the bone, and pulling on an end of the fastener through a respective slot of the second slots tensions the fastener to compress the plate around the bone.

Claims (35)

1. A plate for compressing against a surface of a bone, the plate comprising:

a body having a first longitudinal side and a second longitudinal side that are substantially parallel to each other;

first winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the first longitudinal side; and

second winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the second longitudinal side,

wherein the plate defines first slots proximal to the first longitudinal side, the plate defines second slots proximal to the second longitudinal side, each slot of the first slots is situated generally opposite a corresponding slot of the second slots, the body is contoured to lie passively against the bone, each slot of the first slots is configured to receive a fastener, each slot of the second slots is configured to receive the fastener after the fastener has been looped around the bone, pulling on an end of the fastener through a respective slot of the second slots tensions the fastener to compress the plate around the bone, the first slots are defined in the first winged tabs, and the second slots are defined in the second winged tabs.

2. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the bone is a sternum.

3. The plate of claim 2 , wherein the first winged tabs and the second winged tabs are spaced for the purpose of alignment with intercostal spaces between ribs.

4. The plate of claim 3 , wherein the first winged tabs and the second winged tabs are configured to extend slightly past edges of the sternum and into the intercostal spaces, wherein the second slots are configured to receive the fastener after the fastener has been extended around a posterior aspect of the sternum.

5. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the first winged tabs and the second winged tabs are configured to bend to adapt to the surface of the bone when fasteners are tensioned.

6. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the plate is configured to receive the fastener without the fastener penetrating through the surface of the bone.

7. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the plate includes perforated holes therein, wherein the perforated holes are configured to allow body fluids to pass through the plate.

8. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the plate includes torsion rails at a bone-contacting surface of the plate.

9. The plate of claim 1 , wherein a number of first slots is between four and six, wherein a number of second slots is equal to the number of first slots.

10. The plate of claim 9 , further comprising:

at least one locking mechanism,

wherein the at least one locking mechanism is positioned proximate to at least one of the first slots or the second slots, wherein each locking mechanism of the at least one locking mechanism is configured to receive an end of a respective fastener and to securely lock the respective fastener.

11. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the body is rigid.

12. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the body is configured to flex while maintaining anatomical positioning of bone fragments.

13. The plate of claim 1 , wherein the body of the plate is configured to conform to a shape of the bone upon compression of the plate around the bone.

14. A system for compressing a plate against a surface of a bone, the system comprising:

a plate having a body with a first longitudinal side and a second longitudinal side that are substantially parallel to each other, first winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the first longitudinal side, and second winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the second longitudinal side;

a fastener;

wherein the plate defines first slots proximal to the first longitudinal side, the plate defines second slots proximal to the second longitudinal side, each slot of the first slots is situated generally opposite a corresponding slot of the second slots, the body is contoured to lie passively against the bone, each slot of the first slots is configured to receive a fastener, each slot of the second slots is configured to receive the fastener after the fastener has been looped around the bone, pulling on an end of the fastener through a respective slot of the second slots tensions the fastener to compress the plate around the bone, the first slots are defined in the first winged tabs, and the second slots are defined in the second winged tabs.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the fastener is a single-ended locking fastener having a first end and a second end, wherein a head is provided at the first end of the single-ended locking fastener, wherein the second end of the fastener is configured to be received in a slot.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the fastener is a double-ended locking fastener, wherein both ends of the fastener are configured to be received in a slot.

17. The system of claim 14 , further comprising at least one locking nut that is configured to lock the fastener in a first slot or a second slot.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the plate is provided without any locking mechanism.

19. A method of compressing against a surface of a bone to secure bone fragments, the method comprising:

supplying a plurality of fasteners;

supplying a plate having a body with a first longitudinal side and a second longitudinal side that are substantially parallel to each other, wherein the plate comprises first winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the first longitudinal side and second winged tabs that extend substantially perpendicularly at the second longitudinal side, wherein the plate defines first slots proximal to the first longitudinal side, wherein the plate defines second slots proximal to the second longitudinal side, wherein each slot of the first slots is situated generally opposite a corresponding slot of the second slots, wherein the body is contoured to lie passively against the bone,

receiving each of the plurality of fasteners in a first slot of the first slots;

looping the plurality of fasteners around the bone;

receiving each of the plurality of fasteners in a second slot of the second slots;

applying tension proximate to the end of the fastener to tension the fastener,

wherein tensioning the fastener causes compression of the plate around the bone, the first slots are defined in the first winged tabs, and the second slots are defined in the second winged tabs.
