Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods for vehicles in traffic to simultaneously measure local traffic parameters and communicate the data to a planning vehicle in 5G and 6G. Each participating vehicle can measure, at a predetermined time, the angles of the other vehicles in view, and also the distances to the other vehicles using radar or lidar, for example. They then communicate the data to a planning vehicle. The planning vehicle “merges” or interconnects the various angle measurements to form a self-consistent traffic map of all vehicles in view of any of the participating vehicles, including non-participating vehicles. The planning vehicle then broadcasts the traffic map, or a listing of positions and wireless addresses of the vehicles, for all to use. The vehicles can then identify each other, and communicate with each other, to avoid collisions and facilitate the flow of traffic.

Claims (57)

1. A method to localize vehicles in traffic, the method comprising:

a) broadcasting, by a planning vehicle, a planning message specifying a time and requesting that each vehicle (a “cooperating” vehicle) that receives the planning message, simultaneously and at the specified time, determine a list of angles of other vehicles in view of the cooperating vehicle;

b) receiving, from each cooperating vehicle, a reply message comprising the list of angles of each cooperating vehicle;

c) determining, according to each list of angles, a traffic map comprising two-dimensional coordinates, relative to the planning vehicle, of each vehicle in view of each cooperating vehicle; and

d) broadcasting a traffic map message comprising the traffic map.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the planning message and the traffic map are broadcast according to 5G or 6G technology.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a) determining, by the planning vehicle, one or more distances between the planning vehicle and one or more other vehicles in the traffic; and

b) determining the two-dimensional coordinates of each of the vehicles according to the lists of angles and the distances.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a) receiving, in one or more of the reply messages, one or more distances measured by one or more of the cooperating vehicles; and

b) determining the two-dimensional coordinates of each of the vehicles according to the lists of angles and the distances.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a) determining, by the planning vehicle, at the specified time, a first list of angles of vehicles in view of the planning vehicle;

b) then receiving the reply messages; and then

c) determining the traffic map according to the first list of angles and the lists of angles of the cooperating vehicles.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) each reply message further indicates a wireless address of the cooperating vehicle transmitting the reply message; and

b) the traffic map is configured to indicate, for each cooperating vehicle, the wireless address associated with the two-dimensional coordinates of each cooperating vehicle.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) the reply message of each cooperating vehicle further indicates a color of each of the other vehicles in view of the cooperating vehicle; and

b) the traffic map indicates the color of each vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicles.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

a) the color is encoded, in the reply message, according to a code comprising at most four bits.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) the reply message of each cooperating vehicle further indicates a vehicle type of each of the other vehicles in view of the cooperating vehicle; and

b) the traffic map further indicates a color or vehicle type of each vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicles.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein:

a) the vehicle type is encoded, in the reply message, according to a code comprising at most four bits.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) a particular cooperating vehicle determines the list of angles of the particular cooperating vehicle at an acquisition time; and

b) if the acquisition time differs from the specified time, the particular cooperating vehicle indicates, in the reply message, the acquisition time or a time difference between the acquisition time and the specified time.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) the planning message, the reply messages, and the traffic map message are broadcast on a predetermined frequency or frequency band allocated for wireless communications between vehicles.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

a) the wireless communications on the predetermined frequency or frequency band are restricted to a low transmission power level, wherein the low transmission power level comprises a power level high enough to provide communication at a first distance and low enough to prevent interference at a second distance larger than the first distance.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) each cooperating vehicle determines each angle of each other vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicle according to a centroid of the cooperating vehicle and a centroid of the other vehicle.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) each cooperating vehicle determines each angle of each other vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicle relative to a direction of a road.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a) the reply message of each cooperating vehicle further comprises a latitude and a longitude of the cooperating vehicle according to satellite signals acquired at the specified time.

17. Non-transitory computer-readable media in an access point proximate to a roadway, the media including instructions that when implemented in a computing environment cause a method to be performed, the method comprising:

a) broadcasting a planning message that requests each cooperating vehicle on the roadway to determine, at a specified time, an angle and a distance of each other vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicle, and transmit the angles and the distances to the access point;

b) receiving, from each cooperating vehicle, a reply message comprising the angle and distance of each other vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicle;

c) determining, according to the angles and distances, a traffic map or coordinate listing comprising a position, relative to the access point, of each of the vehicles on the roadway; and

d) broadcasting the traffic map or the coordinate listing.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the method further comprises:

a) determining, according to each reply message, a wireless address of each cooperating vehicle; and

b) including, in the traffic map, the wireless address of each cooperating vehicle.

19. A cooperating vehicle configured to:

a) receive a request message from a planning entity, the request message specifying a specified time and requesting that the cooperating vehicle measure, for each other vehicle in view of the cooperating vehicle at the specified time, an angle and a distance of the other vehicle, wherein the angle is relative to a road direction and the distance is relative to the cooperating vehicle; and

b) transmit a reply message to the planning entity, the reply message indicating the angles and the distances measured by the cooperating vehicle, and a wireless address of the cooperating vehicle.

20. The cooperating vehicle of claim 19 , further configured to:

a) receive, from the planning entity, a traffic map comprising two-dimensional coordinates of at least one other cooperating vehicle, and of each other vehicle in view of the at least one other cooperating vehicle;

b) determine, according to the traffic map, that a collision is imminent between the cooperating vehicle and a second cooperating vehicle; and

c) transmit, to the second cooperating vehicle, an emergency message.
