Abstract

A gaming machine includes a display device and game-logic circuitry that causes the display device to: present cycle outcomes by populating a symbol array with randomly selected symbols; lock any trigger symbols from the randomly selected symbols in the symbol array; present a subset counter for an array subset with locked trigger symbols; in response to a modifier event associated with a first trigger symbol locked within the subset, present a first award value associated with the first trigger symbol; in response to a number of trigger symbols within the subset meeting a trigger amount, provide an award at least partially as a function of the first award value; and in response to the subset counter meeting a termination count, remove any locked trigger symbols from the subset.

in response to the first cycle outcome including at least one trigger symbol, cause the display device to lock the at least one trigger symbol in a first position subset of the symbol array;

initiate a subset counter associated with the first position subset to an initial count in response to the first cycle outcome and cause the display device to present the subset counter;

with the at least one trigger symbol locked in the first position subset, cause the display device to present at least one subsequent cycle outcome by populating the symbol array with another plurality of randomly selected symbols for each of the at least one subsequent cycle outcome;

in response to the at least one subsequent cycle outcome including any additional trigger symbols in the first position subset, cause the display device to lock the additional trigger symbols in the first position subset;

in response to a modifier event associated with a first trigger symbol locked within the first position subset, cause the display device to present a first award value associated with the first trigger symbol, the modifier event including a number of trigger symbols within the first position subset meeting a trigger amount;

in response to the number of trigger symbols within the first position subset meeting the trigger amount, cause the display device to provide an award at least partially as a function of the first award value and respective award values associated with other trigger symbols in the first position subset; and

in response to the subset counter meeting a termination count, cause the display device to remove any locked trigger symbols from the first position subset.

2. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the other trigger symbols in the first position subset include at least one value-bearing symbol having award indicia indicating the award value associated with each of the at least one value-bearing symbol.

3. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first award value is generated at least partially as a function of one or more other award values presented by symbols populating the symbol array.

4. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein revealing the first award value includes presenting an award wheel with a plurality of award segments and selecting a first award segment of the plurality of award segments, the first award segment indicating the first award value.

5. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the modifier event includes player selection of a modifier, the first award value generated at least partially as a function of the selected modifier.

6. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the first trigger symbol has an initial award value, and the first award value is generated at least partially as a function of the initial award value.

7. The gaming machine of claim 6 , wherein the initial award value is presented prior to revealing the first award value, and wherein presentation of the first award value replaces the presentation of the initial award value.

8. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of trigger symbols including the first trigger symbol is associated with the modifier event, and wherein an award value is revealed for each trigger symbol of the plurality of trigger symbols in response to the modifier event.

9. A method for conducting a game using a gaming system, the gaming system comprising a gaming machine and game-logic circuitry, the gaming machine including a display device configured to present a symbol array including a plurality of symbol positions, the method comprising:

causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present a first cycle outcome by populating the symbol array with a plurality of randomly selected symbols;

in response to the first cycle outcome including at least one trigger symbol, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to lock the at least one trigger symbol in a first position subset of the symbol array;

initiating, by the game-logic circuitry, a subset counter associated with the first position subset to an initial count in response to the first cycle outcome and cause the display device to present the subset counter;

with the at least one trigger symbol locked in the first position subset, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present at least one subsequent cycle outcome by populating the symbol array with another plurality of randomly selected symbols for each of the at least one subsequent cycle outcome;

in response to the at least one subsequent cycle outcome including any additional trigger symbols in the first position subset, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to lock the additional trigger symbols in the first position subset;

in response to a modifier event associated with a first trigger symbol locked within the first position subset, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to present a first award value associated with the first trigger symbol, the modifier event including a number of trigger symbols within the first position subset meeting a trigger amount;

in response to the number of trigger symbols within the first position subset meeting the trigger amount, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to provide an award at least partially as a function of the first award value and respective award values associated with other trigger symbols in the first position subset; and

in response to the subset counter meeting a termination count, causing, by the game-logic circuitry, the display device to remove any locked trigger symbols from the first position subset.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the other trigger symbols in the first position subset include at least one value-bearing symbol having award indicia indicating the award value associated with each of the at least one value-bearing symbol.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first award value is generated at least partially as a function of one or more other award values presented by symbols populating the symbol array.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein presenting the first award value includes presenting an award wheel with a plurality of award segments and selecting a first award segment of the plurality of award segments, the first award segment indicating the first award value.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the modifier event includes player selection of a modifier, the first award value generated at least partially as a function of the selected modifier.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first trigger symbol has an initial award value, and the first award value is generated at least partially as a function of the initial award value.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the initial award value is presented prior to presenting the first award value, and wherein presentation of the first award value replaces the presentation of the initial award value.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein a plurality of trigger symbols including the first trigger symbol is associated with the modifier event, and wherein an award value is revealed for each trigger symbol of the plurality of trigger symbols in response to the modifier event.

17. A gaming system comprising:

a gaming machine including a display device configured to present a symbol array including a plurality of symbol positions; and

game-logic circuitry configured to:

cause the display device to present a first cycle outcome by populating the symbol array with a plurality of randomly selected symbols;
