Abstract

A mobile robot is configured for operation in a commercial or industrial setting, such as an office building or retail store. The robot can patrol one or more routes within a building, and can detect violations of security policies by objects, building infrastructure and security systems, or individuals. In response to the detected violations, the robot can perform one or more security operations. The robot can include a removable fabric panel, enabling sensors within the robot body to capture signals that propagate through the fabric. In addition, the robot can scan RFID tags of objects within an area, for instance coupled to store inventory. Likewise, the robot can generate or update one or more semantic maps for use by the robot in navigating an area and for measuring compliance with security policies.

Claims (31)

1. A mobile robot, comprising:

a motorized base configured to move the mobile robot within a building;

a wireless transceiver; and

a controller configured to:

autonomously navigate the mobile robot along a route using the motorized base without human operator intervention; and

as the mobile robot is autonomously navigating the route:

receive a definition of an inclusion geofence via the wireless transceiver corresponding to a portion of the building, the definition including a boundary of the inclusion geofence;

detect an individual approaching the boundary; and

in response to determining the individual is not authorized to be within the inclusion geofence, perform a security action comprising at least notifying the individual about the boundary.

2. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the route through the building is selected from one or more historic routes taken by one of a set of mobile robots.

3. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the route through the building is selected by modifying a historic route taken by one of a set of mobile robots.

4. The mobile robot of claim 3 , wherein modifying a historic route comprises applying a random change in direction to the historic route.

5. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying a speed of the mobile robot and approaching the individual.

6. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises following the individual.

7. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises one or more of notifying security personnel of the individual, notifying a security server of the individual, contacting local authorities, requesting credentials from the individual, and obstructing a movement of the individual.

8. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the security operation further comprises projecting a laser in a line on a surface of the building to notify the individual of the boundary, the line corresponding to at least a portion of the boundary.

9. The mobile robot of claim 1 , wherein the mobile robot autonomously navigates to follow the individual while determining whether the individual is authorized to be within the inclusion geofence.

10. A method, comprising:

autonomously navigating a mobile robot along a route using a motorized base of the mobile robot without human operator intervention; and

as the mobile robot is autonomously navigating the route:

receiving a definition of an inclusion geofence via a wireless transceiver of the mobile robot corresponding to a portion of the building, the definition including a boundary of the inclusion geofence;

detecting an individual approaching the boundary; and

in response to determining the individual is not authorized to be within the inclusion geofence, performing a security action comprising at least notifying the individual about the boundary.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the route through the building is selected from one or more historic routes taken by one of a set of mobile robots.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the route through the building is selected by modifying a historic route taken by one of a set of mobile robots.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein modifying a historic route comprises applying a random change in direction to the historic route.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the security operation further comprises modifying a speed of the mobile robot and approaching the individual.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the security operation further comprises following the individual.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the security operation further comprises one or more of notifying security personnel of the individual, notifying a security server of the individual, contacting local authorities, requesting credentials from the individual, and obstructing a movement of the individual.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the security operation further comprises projecting a laser in a line on a surface of the building to notify the individual of the boundary, the line corresponding to at least a portion of the boundary.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mobile robot autonomously navigates to follow the individual while determining whether the individual is authorized to be within the inclusion geofence.
