Abstract

In one aspect, a playback device is provided that is configured to identify a trigger event indicating a request to associate the playback device with another playback device. Based on identifying the trigger event, the playback device is configured to create a first sound code based on a first sound specimen detected by the playback device. After identifying the trigger event, the playback device is configured to receive from the other playback device a sound object and based on receiving the sound object, identify a second sound code. The playback device is also configured to, based on the first sound code and the second sound code, determine that it and the other playback device have a spatial relationship. Based on that determination, the playback device is configured to cause it and the other playback device to be associated in accordance with the indicated request.

Claims (42)

at least one network interface;

at least one processor;

at least one microphone;

a non-transitory computer-readable medium; and

program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to:

identify a trigger event indicating a request to establish an association between the first playback device and at least a second playback device;

transmit an indication of the trigger event to the second playback device via the at least one network interface;

based on identifying the trigger event, detect a sound specimen via the at least one microphone;

transmit, to the second playback device, a first sound object based on the sound specimen via the at least one network interface;

receive, from the second playback device, an indication that the first playback device and the second playback device have a spatial relationship based on a comparison between the first sound object and a second sound object of the second playback device; and

based on receiving the indication that the first playback device and the second playback device have the spatial relationship, (i) transmit configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established.

2. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the first playback device is a portable playback device and the second playback device is a stationary playback device.

3. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one network interface comprises a 802.15 wireless network interface.

4. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to (i) transmit the configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to (i) transmit the configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established in response to receiving a command from the second playback device.

5. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the first sound object comprises the sound specimen.

6. The first playback device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to create a first sound code based on the sound specimen, and wherein the first sound object comprises the first sound code.

7. The first playback device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to receive, from the second playback device, second configuration data corresponding to the association.

8. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the association comprises at least one of (i) a playback system membership association, (ii) a playback synchrony association, or (iii) a playback transfer association.

9. The first playback device of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data comprises at least one of (i) system membership configuration information, (ii) device-configuration information comprising (a) audio information, (b) corresponding playback timing information, and (c) clock time information, or (iii) playback status information.

10. The playback device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first playback device is configured to, after causing the association to be established, output an audible chime, a light indicator, or both, indicating that the association has been established.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory, computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a first playback device to:

identify a trigger event indicating a request to establish an association between the first playback device and at least a second playback device; transmit an indication of the trigger event to the second playback device via at least one network interface of the first playback device;

based on identifying the trigger event, detect a sound specimen via at least one microphone of the first playback device;

transmit, to the second playback device, a first sound object based on the sound specimen via the at least one network interface;

receive, from the second playback device, an indication that the first playback device and the second playback device have a spatial relationship based on a comparison between the first sound object and a second sound object of the second playback device; and

based on receiving the indication that the first playback device and the second playback device have the spatial relationship, (i) transmit configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first playback device is a portable playback device and the second playback device is a stationary playback device.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one network interface comprises a 802.15 wireless network interface.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the first playback device to (i) transmit the configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the first playback device to (i) transmit the configuration data corresponding to the association to the second playback device, and (ii) cause the association between the first playback device and the second playback device to be established in response to receiving a command from the second playback device.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first sound object comprises the sound specimen.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the first playback device to create a first sound code based on the sound specimen, and wherein the first sound object comprises the first sound code.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the first playback device to receive, from the second playback device, second configuration data corresponding to the association.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the association comprises at least one of (i) a playback system membership association, (ii) a playback synchrony association, or (iii) a playback transfer association.

19.
