Abstract

A scanner redirection method for a remote desktop system that includes a client computing device that has running therein a scanner redirection module, and a host server, the scanner redirection module including a data source manager for communicating with a data source that is configured to communicate with a physical scanner, includes the steps of: receiving from an application running on the host server, a request for a scanned image; in response to the request for the scanned image, transmitting to the data source a request to acquire the scanned image from the physical scanner; and upon receiving the scanned image from the data source, transmitting the scanned image to the application.

in response to receiving by the client computing device from an application running on the host server, a request for scanner properties: acquiring by the client computing device from the data source, properties of the physical scanner that the data source acquired from the physical scanner, and then transmitting by the client computing device to the application, the properties of the physical scanner;

after transmitting the properties of the physical scanner to the application, in response to receiving by the client computing device from the application, a request to adjust one of the properties of the physical scanner: transmitting by the client computing device to the data source, a request to adjust the property of the physical scanner, in response to which the data source requests the physical scanner to adjust the property of the physical scanner;

after transmitting the request to adjust the property of the physical scanner to the data source, in response to receiving by the client computing device from the application, a request for a scanned image: transmitting by the client computing device to the data source, a request to acquire the scanned image from the physical scanner, in response to which the data source acquires the scanned image from the physical scanner having the adjusted property; and

upon receiving the scanned image from the data source, transmitting by the client computing device to the application, the scanned image.

2. The scanner redirection method of claim 1 , further comprising:

loading by the client computing device, the data source manager and the data source into a memory space of the scanner redirection module.

3. The scanner redirection method of claim 1 , further comprising:

upon the receiving of the scanned image from the data source, determining by the client computing device, that there are no more scanned images available from the physical scanner; and

based on the determination that there are no more scanned images available, transmitting by the client computing device to the application, a message indicating that there are no more scanned images available.

4. The scanner redirection method of claim 1 , further comprising:

upon the receiving of the scanned image from the data source, determining by the client computing device, that there is another scanned image available from the physical scanner; and

based on the determination that there is another scanned image available, transmitting by the client computing device to the application, a message indicating the availability of the other scanned image.

5. The scanner redirection method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining by the client computing device, that a watermark is to be added to the scanned image; and

before the transmitting of the scanned image to the application, adding by the client computing device, the watermark to the scanned image.

6. The scanner redirection method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining by the client computing device, a compression method for compressing the scanned image; and

before the transmitting of the scanned image to the application, compressing by the client computing device, the scanned image according to the determined compression method, wherein the application decompresses the transmitted scanned image.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that are executable in a remote desktop system that includes a client computing device that has running therein a scanner redirection module, and a host server, the scanner redirection module including a data source manager for communicating with a data source that is configured to communicate with a physical scanner, wherein the instructions when executed cause the client computing device to carry out a scanner redirection method comprising:

in response to receiving from an application running on the host server, a request for scanner properties: acquiring from the data source, properties of the physical scanner that the data source acquired from the physical scanner, and then transmitting the properties of the physical scanner to the application;

after transmitting the properties of the physical scanner to the application, in response to receiving from the application, a request to adjust one of the properties of the physical scanner: transmitting to the data source, a request to adjust the property of the physical scanner, in response to which the data source requests the physical scanner to adjust the property of the physical scanner;

after transmitting the request to adjust the property of the physical scanner to the data source, in response to receiving from the application, a request for a scanned image: transmitting to the data source, a request to acquire the scanned image from the physical scanner, in response to which the data source acquires the scanned image from the physical scanner having the adjusted property; and

upon receiving the scanned image from the data source, transmitting the scanned image to the application.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the scanner redirection method further comprising:

loading by the client computing device, the data source manager and the data source into a memory space of the scanner redirection module.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the scanner redirection method further comprising:

upon the receiving of the scanned image from the data source, determining by the client computing device, that there are no more scanned images available from the physical scanner; and

based on the determination that there are no more scanned images available, transmitting by the client computing device to the application, a message indicating that there are no more scanned images available.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the scanner redirection method further comprising:

upon the receiving of the scanned image from the data source, determining by the client computing device, that there is another scanned image available from the physical scanner; and

based on the determination that there is another scanned image available, transmitting by the client computing device to the application, a message indicating the availability of the other scanned image.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the scanner redirection method further comprising:

determining by the client computing device, that a watermark is to be added to the scanned image; and

before the transmitting of the scanned image to the application, adding by the client computing device, the watermark to the scanned image.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , the scanner redirection method further comprising:

determining by the client computing device, a compression method for compressing the scanned image; and

before the transmitting of the scanned image to the application, compressing by the client computing device, the scanned image according to the determined compression method, wherein the application decompresses the transmitted scanned image.

13. A client computing device of a remote desktop system, the client computing device having running therein a scanner redirection module, the scanner redirection module including a data source manager for communicating with a data source that is configured to communicate with a physical scanner, and the client computing device including a processor configured to execute instructions from memory to:

in response to receiving from an application running on a host server of the remote desktop system, a request for scanner properties: acquire from the data source, properties of the physical scanner that the data source acquired from the physical scanner, and then transmit the properties of the physical scanner to the application;

after transmitting the properties of the physical scanner to the application, in response to receiving from the application, a request to adjust one of the properties of the physical scanner: transmit to the data source, a request to adjust the property of the physical scanner, in response to which the data source requests the physical scanner to adjust the property of the physical scanner;

after transmitting the request to adjust the property of the physical scanner to the data source, in response to receiving from the application, a request for a scanned image: transmit to the data source, a request to acquire the scanned image from the physical scanner, in response to which the data source acquires the scanned image from the physical scanner having the adjusted property; and
