Abstract

Systems and methods for obtaining metrics relating to an extended reality experience and using the obtained metrics to perform remedial actions, such as managing user motion sickness, determining user performance relating to a designed game difficulty, and performing home automation are disclosed. The methods include determining a starting and ending checkpoint in an extended reality experience. Data from a plurality of users as they navigate between the determined checkpoints is obtained and used to determine a metric, such as a median, average, or other representative data. The current user's navigation through the same checkpoints is monitored and compared with the metric. The results from the comparison are used to enhance extended reality experience, which includes customizing the experience for motion sickness, game difficulty level, and home automation.

Claims (62)

1. A smart home automation method comprising;

generating a virtual reality experience for display on a virtual reality device;

determining whether a current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on a path taken by the current user in the virtual reality experience; and

in response to determining that the current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on the path taken in the virtual reality experience:

providing an alert to the current user in the virtual reality experience to take a different path;

activating a smart home device to manage the current user's motion sickness;

determining whether the activated smart home device has resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness; and

in response to determining that the activated smart home device has not resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness:

increasing a setting of the smart home device to a higher level.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

scanning for one or more smart home devices within a threshold distance of the virtual reality device;

identifying the smart home device based on the scanning; and

connecting via an API, the virtual reality device with the smart home device identified via the scan.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that a smart device outside a field of view from the virtual reality device is not within a threshold distance of the virtual reality device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the current user will experience motion sickness on the path further comprises:

obtaining machine learning data from a plurality of users that have taken the same path as the current user; and

in response to determining that an average user, from the plurality of users, experienced motion sickness on the same path:

determining that the current user is likely to experience motion sickness.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the smart home device is selected from a group consisting of a fan, air conditioner, ambient lighting, refrigerator, exercise equipment, temperature controller, a window opening device, and a chair reclining device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein activating the smart home device is performed automatically.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein activating the smart home device comprises:

accessing user profile of the current user;

obtaining user preferred settings for the smart home device from the user profile; and

turning on the smart home device to the user preferred settings.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the different path has a lesser level of difficulty than the path taken.

9. A smart home automation method comprising;

generating a virtual reality experience for display on a virtual reality device;

determining whether a current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on a path taken by the current user in the virtual reality experience, and

in response to determining that the current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on the path taken in the virtual reality experience:

providing an alert to the current user in the virtual reality experience to take a different path;

activating a smart home device to manage the current user's motion sickness;

determining whether the activated smart home device has resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness; and

in response to determining that the activated smart home device has not resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness:

activating more than one smart home device simultaneously.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

further in response to determining that the activated smart home device has not resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness:

activating more than one smart home device simultaneously.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual reality device is a virtual, augmented, or mixed reality headset.

12. A smart home automation system comprising;

communications circuitry configured to access a virtual reality device; and

control circuitry configured to:

generate a virtual reality experience for display on the virtual reality device;

determine whether a current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on a path taken by the current user in the virtual reality experience; and

in response to determining that the current user is or will be experiencing motion sickness based on the path taken in the virtual reality experience:

provide an alert to the current user in the virtual reality experience to take a different path;

activate a smart home device to manage the current user's motion sickness;

determine whether the activated smart home device has resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness; and

in response to determining that the activated smart home device has not resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness:

increase a setting of the smart home device to a higher level.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine that a smart device outside a field of view from the virtual reality device is not within a threshold distance of the virtual reality device.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein determining that the current user will experience motion sickness on the path further comprises, the control circuitry configured to:

obtain machine learning data from a plurality of users that have taken the same path as the current user; and

in response to determining that an average user, from the plurality of users, experienced motion sickness on the same path:

determine that the current user is likely to experience motion sickness.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the smart home device is selected by the control circuitry from a group consisting of a fan, air conditioner, lights, refrigerator, exercise equipment, temperature controller, a window opening device, and a chair reclining device.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein activating the smart home device comprises, the control circuitry configured to:

access user profile of the current user;

obtain user preferred settings for the smart home device from the user profile; and

turn on the smart home device to the user preferred settings.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

further in response to determining that the activated smart home device has not resulted in reducing the current user's motion sickness:

activate more than one smart home device simultaneously.
