Abstract

A media distribution device receives media content including media items to be broadcast. the media items include common media items to be delivered to end users by each of multiple different media delivery devices. “Common” refers to the fact that the same media items are delivered by the media delivery devices, and does not mean “ordinary.” The common media items are processed into first chunks and second chunks. The sizes of the first chunks the second chunks are different, with the size of the first chunks determined based at least in part on a first media delivery schedule associated with a first media delivery device and the size of the second chunks determined based at least in part on a second media delivery schedule associated with a second media delivery device. The first chunks are transmitted to the first media delivery device, and the second chunks are delivered to the second media delivery device.

Claims (69)

1. A method for use in a media distribution device, the method comprising:

receiving, at the media distribution device, media content including media items to be broadcast, wherein the media items include common media items to be delivered to end users by each of a plurality of different media delivery devices;

processing the common media items into first chunks having a first chunk size determined, based at least in part, on a first media delivery schedule associated with a first media delivery device, wherein the first media delivery schedule includes a first broadcast or streaming schedule;

processing the common media items into second chunks having a second chunk size determined, based at least in part, on a second media delivery schedule associated with a second media delivery device, wherein the second chunk size is different than the first chunk size, and wherein the second media delivery schedule includes a second broadcast or streaming schedule;

transmitting the first chunks to the first media delivery device; and

transmitting the second chunks to the second media delivery device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the first chunks and the second chunks of the common media items in a database.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the common media items as individual files;

retrieving the individual files from storage; and

generating the first chunks and the second chunks.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

at least one of the first media delivery schedule or the second media delivery schedule is a broadcast schedule.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

at least one of the first media delivery schedule or the second media delivery schedule is a streaming schedule.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first chunk size and the second chunk size are determined, based at least in part, on one of an hour, a daypart, a day, or a commercial-free segment indicated in a media delivery schedule.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

maintaining, by the media distribution device, an index identifying individual files included in the first chunks and the second chunks.

8. A media distribution device comprising:

a processor;

memory coupled to the processor;

a communications interface coupled to the processor and the memory, the communications interface configured to receive media content including media items to be broadcast, wherein the media items include common media items to be delivered to end users by each of a plurality of different media delivery devices;

the processor configured to process the media content for delivery to the plurality of different media delivery devices, wherein processing the media content for delivery includes:

processing the common media items into first chunks having a first chunk size determined, based at least in part, on a first media delivery schedule associated with a first media delivery device, wherein the first media delivery schedule includes a first broadcast or streaming schedule;

processing the common media items into second chunks having a second chunk size determined, based at least in part, on a second media delivery schedule associated with a second media delivery device, wherein the second chunk size is different than the first chunk size, and wherein the second media delivery schedule includes a second broadcast or streaming schedule;

the communications interface further configured to:

transmit the first chunks to the first media delivery device; and

transmit the second chunks to the second media delivery device.

9. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

store the first chunks and the second chunks in the memory.

10. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

store the common media items in the memory as individual files;

retrieve the individual files from the memory; and

generate the first chunks and the second chunks.

11. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein:

at least one of the first media delivery schedule or the second media delivery schedule is a broadcast schedule.

12. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein:

at least one of the first media delivery schedule or the second media delivery schedule is a streaming schedule.

13. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein:

the first chunk size and the second chunk size are determined, based at least in part, on one of an hour, a daypart, a day, or a commercial-free segment indicated in a media delivery schedule.

14. The media distribution device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

store an index in the memory, wherein the index identifies individual files included in the first chunks and the second chunks.

15. A media distribution system comprising:

a media distribution device including a first processor, a first memory and a first communications interface;

a plurality of different media delivery devices including second processors, second memories and second communications interfaces;

the media distribution device configured to:

receive media content including media items to be broadcast, wherein the media items include common media items to be delivered to end users by each of the plurality of different media delivery devices;

process the media content for delivery includes the plurality of different media delivery devices, wherein processing the media content includes:

generating first chunks of the common media items having a first chunk size based, at least in part, on a first media delivery schedule associated with a first media delivery device;

generating second chunks of the common media items having a second chunk size determined, based at least in part, on a second media delivery schedule associated with a second media delivery device, wherein the second chunk size is different than the first chunk size;

transmit the first chunks of the common media items to the first media delivery device;

transmit the second chunks of the common media items to the second media delivery device;

the first media delivery device configured to transmit the first chunks of the common media items to at least a first end user; and

the second media delivery device configured to transmit the second chunks of the common media items to at least a second end user.

16. The media distribution system of claim 15 , wherein the media distribution device is further configured to:

subsequent to generating the first chunks of the common media items and the second chunks of the common media items, store the first chunks of the common media items and the second chunks of the common media items in the first memory.

17. The media distribution system of claim 15 , wherein the media distribution device is further configured to:

store the common media items in the first memory as individual files;

retrieve the individual files from the first memory; and

generate the first chunks of the common media items and the second chunks of the common media items subsequent to retrieving the individual files from the first memory.

18. The media distribution system of claim 15 , wherein:

a single chunk of data includes information associated with a predetermined number of the common media items.

19. The media distribution system of claim 15 , wherein the media distribution device is further configured to:

generate first-sized data chunks for storage and second-sized data chunks for transmission.

20. The media distribution system of claim 15 , wherein:

a first plurality of the first chunks of the common media items is limited to media items; and

a second plurality of the first chunks of the common media items is limited to metadata associated with the common media items.
