Abstract

A cap for a temporary fastener comprises a hollow, cup-shaped body and an inwardly tapered neck. The hollow body fits over a workpiece-engaging portion of the temporary fastener, and the neck extends from the hollow body. The tapered neck terminates in a hollow tip that is sized and configured to fit over aligned holes in the joined workpieces and to contact a minimal surface area of the outermost workpiece to reduce surface damage to the workpieces such that any damage will be removed when the holes are countersunk in the normal course of assembly.

Claims (42)

1. A fastener assembly configured to be inserted in aligned holes formed in two or more workpieces to temporarily hold the workpieces together, the outermost workpiece having a 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface, the fastener assembly comprising:

a fastener configured to be inserted through the aligned holes; and

a cap including:

a hollow body configured to fit over a portion of the fastener;

an inwardly tapered neck extending from the hollow body; and

a vertically extending flange forming a hollow tip sized and configured to contact a minimal exterior surface area of the outermost one of the workpieces, the inwardly tapered neck terminating at the vertically extending flange, the vertically extending flange including a lower edge and tapering inwardly at the lower edge at sixty degrees from a vertical axis to engage the 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface for aligning the fastener with the aligned holes.

2. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow tip has an internal diameter approximately equal to an internal diameter of the aligned holes.

3. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow tip has an external diameter 5% greater than an internal diameter of the aligned holes.

4. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the aligned holes each include a relatively smaller diameter straight hole and wherein the hole in the outermost workpiece includes a relatively larger diameter counter sunk hole.

5. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the hollow tip has an internal diameter approximately equal to an internal diameter of the aligned holes and an external diameter less than an internal diameter of the counter-sunk hole.

6. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the hollow tip has an internal diameter approximately equal to an internal diameter of the aligned holes and an external diameter less than an internal diameter of the counter-sunk hole.

7. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow tip has an external diameter no greater than 0.5 inches.

8. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow tip has an internal diameter of approximately 0.19 inches and an external diameter of approximately 0.24 inches.

9. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow body and the inwardly tapered neck are integrally formed via injection molding.

10. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow body and the inwardly tapered neck are integrally formed via three-dimensional printing.

11. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the inwardly tapered neck tapers inwardly relative to the hollow body at an angle of between 40 and 50 degrees.

12. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the fastener includes a hollow cylinder having a longitudinal axis, an upper open end, and a lower open end defining a part-engaging shoulder.

13. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 12 , wherein the fastener further includes a spring-loaded plunger extending partially through the hollow cylinder and out the upper open end.

14. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 13 , wherein the fastener further includes a fastening mechanism projecting axially from the lower open end and axially moveable relative to the hollow cylinder by the spring-loaded plunger.

15. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow tip has an internal diameter approximately equal to an internal diameter of the aligned holes.

16. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the aligned holes each include a relatively smaller diameter straight hole and wherein the hole in the outermost workpiece includes a relatively larger diameter counter sunk hole.

17. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow body and the inwardly tapered neck are integrally formed via injection molding.

18. The fastener assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the hollow body and the inwardly tapered neck are integrally formed via three-dimensional printing.

19. A fastener assembly configured to be inserted in aligned holes formed in two or more workpieces to temporarily hold the workpieces together, the outermost workpiece having a 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface, the fastener assembly comprising:

a fastener configured to be inserted through the aligned holes, the fastener including:

a hollow cylinder having a longitudinal axis, an upper open end, and a lower open end that defines a part-engaging shoulder;

a spring-loaded plunger extending partially through the cylinder and out the upper open end; and

a fastening mechanism projecting axially from the lower open end of the cylinder and axially moveable relative to the cylinder by the plunger; and

a cap including:

a hollow body configured to fit over a portion of the fastener;

an inwardly tapered neck extending from the hollow body; and

a vertically extending flange forming a hollow tip sized and configured to contact a minimal exterior surface area of the outermost one of the workpieces, the inwardly tapered neck terminating at the vertically extending flange, the vertically extending flange including a lower edge and tapering inwardly at the lower edge at sixty degrees from a vertical axis to engage the 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface for aligning the fastener with the aligned holes.

20. A fastener assembly configured to be inserted in aligned holes formed in two or more workpieces to temporarily hold the workpieces together, the outermost workpiece having a 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface, the fastener assembly comprising:

a fastener configured to be inserted through the aligned holes, the fastener including:

a hollow cylinder having a longitudinal axis, an upper open end, and a lower open end that defines a part-engaging shoulder;

a spring-loaded plunger extending partially through the cylinder and out the upper open end; and

a fastening mechanism projecting axially from the lower open end of the cylinder and axially moveable relative to the cylinder by the plunger; and

a cap including:

a hollow body configured to fit over a portion of the fastener;

an inwardly tapered neck extending from the hollow body, the inwardly tapered neck and the hollow body being integrally formed via at least one of injection molding and three-dimensional printing; and

a vertically extending flange forming a hollow tip sized and configured to contact a minimal exterior surface area of the outermost one of the workpieces, the inwardly tapered neck terminating at the vertically extending flange, the vertically extending flange including a lower edge and tapering inwardly at the lower edge at sixty degrees from a vertical axis to engage the 100 degree to 120 degree flush shear head countersunk hole surface for aligning the fastener with the aligned holes,

the hollow tip having an external diameter no greater than 0.5 inches and an internal diameter approximately equal to an internal diameter of the aligned holes.
