Abstract

A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item includes a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover one or more of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item. The thermally insulating pad includes a compostable panel that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, and compostable or recyclable film forming a pocket and surrounding the panel to prevent water from reaching the panel within the pocket. The film is secured to the panel along a portion but not all of the opposite surfaces of the compostable panel.

Claims (33)

1. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a panel comprising a porous layer that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, the panel having opposite surfaces having a length and a width with a thickness between the opposite surfaces that is smaller than the length and the width, and

a compostable or recyclable film forming a pocket and surrounding the panel to prevent water from reaching the panel within the pocket, wherein the film is secured to the panel along a portion but not all of the opposite surfaces of the panel,

air in the pocket between the panel and the compostable or recyclable film,

wherein the pad is scored with the panel compressed along a line so as to be foldable into a plurality of rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent with the panel extending through the fold.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad is scored along at least two lines so as to be foldable into three rectangular sections.

3. The article of claim 2 , wherein the at least two lines are parallel.

4. The article of claim 3 , wherein the pad is scored along just the two lines so as to be foldable into exactly three rectangular sections.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film is secured to the panel by heat bonding.

6. The article of claim 1 , wherein a surface of the layer has bumps.

7. The article of claim 6 , wherein the surface of the panel is corrugated.

8. The article of claim 7 , wherein the film provides two sheets that are joined at a seal no more than about an inch from an edge of the panel.

9. The article of claim 1 , wherein the compostable or recyclable film comprises sheets that are joined along a path than extends around an entire perimeter of the panel.

10. The article of claim 1 , wherein the film is heat sealed along opposing edges of the panel.

11. The article of claim 1 , wherein the starch comprises a grain starch, a root starch, a vegetable starch, or combinations thereof.

12. The article of claim 11 , wherein the starch comprises a root starch.

13. The article of claim 11 , wherein the starch comprises corn root starch.

14. The article of claim 1 , wherein the panel has a thickness between about ¼ and 1 inch.

15. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad is scored to form a recess that extends through about 50-75% of the thickness of the panel.

16. The article of claim 1 , wherein the pad has a density of 0.6-1.0 g/cm 3 .

17. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a panel comprising a porous layer that has a bumpy surface and that holds together as a single unit and is formed primarily of starch, the panel having opposite surfaces having a length and a width with a thickness between the opposite surfaces that is smaller than the length and the width, and

a compostable or recyclable film forming a pocket and surrounding the panel to prevent water from reaching the panel within the pocket, wherein the film is secured to the panel along a portion but not all of the opposite surfaces of the panel, wherein the compostable or recyclable film forming the pocket includes two parallel sheet joined along an edge that is no more than about an inch from an edge of the panel,

air in the pocket between the panel and the compostable or recyclable film,

wherein the pad is scored with the panel compressed along exactly two parallel lines so as to be foldable into exactly three rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent with the panel extending through the fold.

18. A thermal insulation article for placement in a shipping container to hold an item, comprising:

a thermally insulating pad shaped to be positioned in a cavity of a rectangular prism shipping container to be adjacent to and cover from two to five of out of a floor, four side walls and cover of the container while leaving an interior space to receive the item, wherein the thermally insulating pad includes

a plurality of panel sections, each panel section comprising a porous layer holding together as a single unit and formed primarily of starch, and

a compostable or recyclable film surrounding the plurality of panel sections to form a pocket and prevent water from reaching the panel sections,

air in the pocket between the panel sections and the compostable or recyclable film,

wherein the pad is scored with the panel compressed along a line so as to be foldable into a plurality of rectangular sections dimensioned to substantially span whichever of the floor, plurality of side walls or cover that the rectangular sections are adjacent.
