Abstract

A user control device for a surgical system. The surgical system includes a robotic manipulator to support and move a surgical instrument that has an energy applicator. One or more controllers operate the robotic manipulator in a semi-autonomous mode and calculate an instrument feed rate, which is the velocity at which the energy applicator advances along a tool path in the semi-autonomous mode. The user control device includes a housing configured as a pendant configured to be held in one hand of a user. A first control member is mounted to the housing and can be depressed to initiate operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode. A second control member is mounted to the housing and can be depressed to modify the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode.

Claims (53)

1. A surgical system comprising:

a robotic manipulator configured to support and move a surgical instrument that includes an energy applicator;

at least one controller configured to operate the robotic manipulator in a semi-autonomous mode and being configured to calculate an instrument feed rate, wherein the instrument feed rate is a velocity at which the energy applicator advances along a tool path in the semi-autonomous mode; and

a hand-held pendant coupled to the at least one controller, wherein the hand-held pendant comprises a first control member configured to be placed in a depressed state to initiate operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode and a second control member to modify the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode; and

wherein the at least one controller is configured to: enable continued operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode in response to the first control member being held in the depressed state; and cease the operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode in response to the first control member being released from the depressed state.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to:

initially output a zero velocity for the instrument feed rate in response to the first control member being placed in the depressed state to initiate operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode; and

thereafter, output a non-zero velocity for the instrument feed rate in response to an input from the second control member to modify the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode.

3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to:

operate the robotic manipulator in a manual mode; and

switch operation of the robotic manipulator from the manual mode to the semi-autonomous mode in response to the first control member being placed in the depressed state.

4. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to enable the second control member to modify the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode only if the first control member is held in the depressed state.

5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to:

operate the robotic manipulator in a manual mode; and

switch operation of the robotic manipulator from the semi-autonomous mode to the manual mode in response the first control member being released from the depressed state.

6. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the second control member is configured to increase and/or decrease the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode.

7. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the hand-held pendant includes a housing configured to be held in one hand of a user.

8. The surgical system of claim 7 , wherein:

the first control member is located on an underside of the housing; and

the second control member is located on an upper surface of the housing.

9. The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein:

the first control member comprises a trigger configured to be depressed by a finger of the one hand of the user; and

the second control member comprises one or more buttons configured to be depressed by a thumb of the one hand of the user.

10. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the hand-held pendant is spaced apart from the robotic manipulator and configured to remotely control the robotic manipulator.

11. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a cart configured to support the robotic manipulator, and wherein a cable is connected between the hand-held pendant and the cart, wherein the cable is configured to enable input signals from the first control member and second control member to be transmitted to the at least one controller.

12. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a navigation system, and wherein the hand-held pendant further comprises a third control member configured to enable: commands to be entered to the navigation system and/or data to be transmitted to the navigation system.

13. A user control device for a surgical system that includes a robotic manipulator being configured to support and move a surgical instrument that includes an energy applicator, and at least one controller configured to operate the robotic manipulator in a semi-autonomous mode and being configured to calculate an instrument feed rate, wherein the instrument feed rate is a velocity at which the energy applicator advances along a tool path in the semi-autonomous mode, the user control device comprising:

a housing configured as a pendant configured to be held in one hand of a user;

a first control member mounted to the housing and being configured to be: placed in a depressed state to initiate operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode; held in the depressed state to enable continued operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode; and released from the depressed state to cease the operation of the robotic manipulator in the semi-autonomous mode; and

a second control member mounted to the housing and being configured to be depressed to modify the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode.

14. The user control device of claim 13 , wherein:

the first control member is located on an underside of the housing and the first control member comprises a trigger configured to be depressed by a finger of the one hand of the user; and

the second control member is located on an upper surface of the housing and the second control member comprises one or more buttons configured to be depressed by a thumb of the one hand of the user, and wherein the second control member is configured to increase and/or decrease the instrument feed rate in the semi-autonomous mode.

15. The user control device of claim 13 , further comprising a cable coupled to the housing and being configured to enable transmission of input signals from the first control member and second control member.

16. The user control device of claim 13 , further comprising a third control member mounted to the housing and being configured to be depressed to enable commands to be entered to a navigation system and/or data to be transmitted to a navigation system.

17. A method of operating a surgical system, the surgical system comprising a robotic manipulator configured to support and move a surgical instrument that includes an energy applicator, a hand-held pendant comprising a first control member and a second control member, and at least one controller coupled to the robotic manipulator and the hand-held pendant, the method comprising the at least one controller performing the following steps:

initiating operation of the robotic manipulator in a semi-autonomous mode in response to the first control member of the hand-held pendant being placed in a depressed state;
