Abstract

Items of inventory of a data center are organized in a hierarchical manner across nodes of at least one hierarchical tree. A method of generating items of inventory of the data center to which a user has access includes generating a plurality of first user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a first hierarchical tree, and performing a database look-up on an inventory database using the first user access paths to determine the inventory items of the data center to which the user has access. The inventory database stores for each inventory item of the data center identifying information that uniquely identifies the inventory item and node information indicating the node of the first hierarchical tree where the inventory item is arranged.

Claims (67)

1 . A method of generating items of inventory of a data center to which a user has access, wherein the items of inventory are organized in a hierarchical manner across nodes of at least one hierarchical tree, said method comprising:

generating a plurality of first user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a first hierarchical tree; and

performing a database look-up on an inventory database using the first user access paths to determine inventory items of the data center to which the user has access,

wherein the inventory database stores for each inventory item of the data center identifying information that uniquely identifies the inventory item and node information indicating the node of the first hierarchical tree where the inventory item is arranged.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after generating the plurality of first user access paths, storing the plurality of first user access paths in a cache; and

prior to performing the database look-up, retrieving the plurality of first user access paths from the cache.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

after storing the plurality of first user access paths in the cache, detecting that the inventory has changed;

updating the inventory database to apply the detected changes to the inventory; and

after updating the inventory database, performing another database look-up on the updated inventory database using the first user access paths retrieved from the cache.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

detecting that the permissions given to the user have changed;

re-generating the plurality of first user access paths based on the changed permissions; and

performing another database look-up on the inventory database using the first user access paths that have been re-generated.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein

the first user access paths specify first excluded access paths and overrides to the first excluded access paths, and the node information of each inventory item specifies an access path thereto, and

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user if the access path to the inventory item does not contain any of the first excluded access paths, or if the access path to the inventory item contains any of the first excluded access paths and any of the overrides to the first excluded access paths.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein

the first user access paths specify first included access paths and overrides to the first included access paths, and the node information of each inventory item specifies an access path thereto, and

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user if the access path to the inventory item contains any of the first included access paths and does not contain any of the overrides to the first included access paths.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a plurality of second user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a second hierarchical tree,

wherein the database look-up is performed on the inventory database using the first user access paths and the second user access paths.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user when the database look-up performed on the inventory database using either the first user access paths or the second user access paths indicates that the user has permission to access the inventory item.

A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that are executable on a processor to carry out a method of generating items of inventory of a data center to which a user has access, wherein the items of inventory are organized in a hierarchical manner across nodes of at least one hierarchical tree, said method comprising:

generating a plurality of first user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a first hierarchical tree; and

performing a database look-up on an inventory database using the first user access paths to determine inventory items of the data center to which the user has access,

wherein the inventory database stores for each inventory item of the data center identifying information that uniquely identifies the inventory item and node information indicating the node of the first hierarchical tree where the inventory item is arranged.

10 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises:

after generating the plurality of first user access paths, storing the plurality of first user access paths in a cache; and

prior to performing the database look-up, retrieving the plurality of first user access paths from the cache.

11 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises:

after storing the plurality of first user access paths in the cache, detecting that the inventory has changed;

updating the inventory database to apply the detected changes to the inventory; and

after updating the inventory database, performing another database look-up on the updated inventory database using the first user access paths retrieved from the cache.

12 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises:

detecting that the permissions given to the user have changed;

re-generating the plurality of first user access paths based on the changed permissions; and

performing another database look-up on the inventory database using the first user access paths that have been re-generated.

13 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein

the first user access paths specify first excluded access paths and overrides to the first excluded access paths, and the node information of each inventory item specifies an access path thereto, and

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user if the access path to the inventory item does not contain any of the first excluded access paths, or if the access path to the inventory item contains any of the first excluded access paths and any of the overrides to the first excluded access paths.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein

the first user access paths specify first included access paths and overrides to the first included access paths, and the node information of each inventory item specifies an access path thereto, and

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user if the access path to the inventory item contains any of the first included access paths and does not contain any of the overrides to the first included access paths.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises:

generating a plurality of second user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a second hierarchical tree,

wherein the database look-up is performed on the inventory database using the first user access paths and the second user access paths.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein

an inventory item is determined to be accessible by the user when the database look-up performed on the inventory database using either the first user access paths or the second user access paths indicates that the user has permission to access the inventory item.

17 . A cloud platform for generating items of inventory of a data center to which a user has access, wherein the items of inventory are organized in a hierarchical manner across nodes of at least one hierarchical tree, and the cloud platform is programmed to carry out the steps of:

generating a plurality of first user access paths based on permissions given to the user at one or more nodes of a first hierarchical tree; and

performing a database look-up on an inventory database using the first user access paths to determine inventory items of the data center to which the user has access,

wherein the inventory database stores for each inventory item of the data center identifying information that uniquely identifies the inventory item and node information indicating the node of the first hierarchical tree where the inventory item is arranged.

18 . The cloud platform of claim 17 , wherein the steps further comprise:

after generating the plurality of first user access paths, storing the plurality of first user access paths in a cache; and

prior to performing the database look-up, retrieving the plurality of first user access paths from the cache.

19 . The cloud platform of claim 18 , wherein the steps further comprise:

after storing the plurality of first user access paths in the cache, detecting that the inventory has changed;

updating the inventory database to apply the detected changes to the inventory; and

after updating the inventory database, performing another database look-up on the updated inventory database using the first user access paths retrieved from the cache.

20 . The cloud platform of claim 18 , wherein the steps further comprise:

detecting that the permissions given to the user have changed;

re-generating the plurality of first user access paths based on the changed permissions; and

performing another database look-up on the inventory database using the first user access paths that have been re-generated.
