Abstract

A wireless data transmission system for transmitting measurement data of a power utility is adapted such that the measurement data is transmitted in a first operating mode and wireless transmission of the measurement data is paused in a second operating mode. The wireless data transmission system operates in the first or second operating mode as a function of temperature.

Claims (40)

1. A wireless data transmission system for transmitting measurement data of a power utility, the system comprising:

a transmission circuit adapted to:

cause wireless transmission of the measurement data via at least one wireless transmission element in a first operating mode of the wireless data transmission system, and

determine, based on a temperature sensed within an enclosure of the power utility, whether the wireless data transmission system is to transition into a second operating mode in which the wireless transmission of the measurement data is paused,

the transmission circuit comprising:

a first circuit; and

a second circuit operable to drive the at least one wireless transmission element,

the first circuit adapted to selectively activate the second circuit based on the temperature being below a temperature threshold and selectively deactivate the second circuit based on the temperature being above the temperature threshold.

2. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the first circuit is adapted to selectively activate and deactivate the second circuit based on the temperature at and/or in proximity to the second circuit.

3. The wireless data transmission system claim 1 , wherein the first circuit is adapted to selectively disconnect the second circuit from a power supply based on the temperature being above the temperature threshold.

4. The wireless data transmission system of claim 3 , wherein the transmission circuit further comprises a controllable switching element interconnected between the power supply and the second circuit, the first circuit being coupled to a control terminal of the controllable switching element.

5. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the first circuit is coupled to the second circuit via a digital data interface to provide the measurement data to the second circuit for the wireless transmission.

6. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the first circuit comprises a first integrated circuit to:

cause the measurement data to be provided to the second circuit for the wireless transmission in the first operating mode; and

cause the measurement data to be stored in a buffer and/or a memory of the first circuit in the second operating mode.

7. The wireless data transmission system of claim 6 , wherein the first integrated circuit is adapted to cause the measurement data stored in the buffer and/or the memory to be provided to the second circuit for the wireless transmission when the wireless data transmission system returns from the second operating mode to the first operating mode.

8. The wireless data transmission system of claim 6 , wherein the first integrated circuit is adapted to cause the measurement data to be stored in the buffer and/or the memory with timing information and/or to cause the measurement data stored in the buffer and/or the memory to be provided to the second circuit with the timing information for the wireless transmission.

9. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the second circuit comprises a second integrated circuit.

10. The wireless data transmission system of claim 9 , wherein the second integrated circuit is one of a wireless communication processor and a microprocessor.

11. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wireless transmission element is an antenna.

12. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless data transmission system further comprises a sensor to capture the measurement data and/or a digital and/or analog input interface adapted to receive the measurement data and/or a measurement signal from the sensor.

13. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , further comprising a housing in which the transmission circuit is housed.

14. The wireless data transmission system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one wireless transmission element is housed in the housing.

15. The wireless data transmission system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one wireless transmission element is arranged externally of the housing.

16. The wireless data transmission system of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor adapted to measure the temperature is coupled to the transmission circuit.

17. An electric power utility, comprising:

an enclosure; and

at least one wireless data transmission system installed within the enclosure, the at least one wireless data transmission system comprising a transmission circuit adapted to:

cause wireless transmission of measurement data of the power utility via at least one wireless transmission element in a first operating mode of the at least one wireless data transmission system, and

determine, based on a temperature sensed within the enclosure, whether the at least one wireless data transmission system is to transition into a second operating mode in which the wireless transmission of the measurement data is paused,

the transmission circuit comprising:

a first circuit; and

a second circuit operable to drive the at least one wireless transmission element,

the first circuit adapted to selectively activate the second circuit based on the temperature being below a temperature threshold and selectively deactivate the second circuit based on the temperature being above the temperature threshold.

18. The electric power utility of claim 17 , wherein the electric power utility is a transformer and the enclosure is one of a transformer cabinet, a transformer housing, and a transformer tank.

19. A method comprising:

wirelessly transmitting, by a wireless data transmission system, measurement data in a first operating mode of the wireless data transmission system, the measurement data captured of a power utility,

determining, by the wireless data transmission system, based on a temperature sensed within an enclosure of the power utility, whether the temperature exceeds a temperature threshold, and

in response to a determination that the temperature exceeds the temperature threshold, transitioning the wireless data transmission system into a second operating mode in which wireless transmission of the measurement data is paused,

the wireless data transmission system comprising a first circuit and a second circuit operable to drive at least one wireless transmission element of the wireless data transmission system, wherein the first circuit selectively activates the second circuit based on the temperature being below the temperature threshold and selectively deactivates the second circuit based on the determination that the temperature exceeds the temperature threshold.
