Abstract

There is provided a method for preparing a wellbore for insertion of a barrier, the method comprising: providing a section of tubing or formation within the wellbore having a modified internal surface that is shaped such that a region adjacent the modified internal surface can be filled with barrier material and the barrier material can solidify to interlock with and be anchored by the modified internal surface.

Claims (21)

1. A method for inserting a barrier in a wellbore having a section of tubing therewithin, wherein the section of tubing has an internal surface, an internal diameter, an external surface and an external diameter, the method comprising:

modifying a shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore, thereby providing a modified internal surface of the section of tubing, such that the internal diameter of the section of tubing varies in a direction parallel to the central axis of the section of tubing while a shape of the external surface of the section of tubing and the external diameter of the section of tubing remain unmodified; and

filling a region adjacent the modified internal surface of the section of tubing with barrier material and allowing the barrier material to solidify to interlock with and be anchored by the modified internal surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises including a pattern of indents therein.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the well bore comprises providing a region of the internal surface of the section of tubing having a radial cross section which varies longitudinally, such that the barrier material is configured to be anchored longitudinally.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the barrier material is a liquid during the filling.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the well bore comprises providing a region of the internal surface of the section of tubing having a radial cross section which varies longitudinally, such that the barrier material is configured to be anchored longitudinally.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the shape of an internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore by removing material from the section of downhole tubing using a downhole tool.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein removing the material from the section of tubing using the downhole tool comprises removing between 0.1% and 90% of the material from the section of tubing.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein forming the modified surface comprises removing between 0.1% and 60% of the material in a length of the tubing.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein forming the modified surface comprises removing between 0.1% and 10% of the material in a length of the tubing.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the section of tubing is electrically conductive and wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises establishing an electrical connection between the tubing and at least one conductive element such that selected portions of the internal surface of the section of tubing are corroded via an electrolytic process.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a surface of the at least one conductive element is shaped with one of, patterns or grooves to control the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the at least one conductive element is centrally placed in a downhole tool.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises adding material to the section of tubing using a downhole tool.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises forming a plurality of radial grooves in the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein a profile of the plurality of radial grooves is sinusoidal in a longitudinal cross section through the internal surface of the section of tubing.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore such that the internal diameter is a larger diameter at a lower end of the section of tubing and a smaller diameter at an upper end of the section of tubing.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the shape of the internal surface of the section of tubing within the wellbore comprises removing between 0.1% and 90% of the material in a length of from the section of tubing.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein forming the modified surface comprises removing between 0.1% and 60% of the material in a length of the tubing.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein forming the modified surface comprises removing between 0.1% and 10% of the material in a length of the tubing.
