Abstract

Systems and apparatus may carry out analysis of battery physical phenomena, and characterize batteries based on phenomena occurring in particular time and/or frequency domains. These systems may be additionally responsible for charging and/or monitoring a rechargeable battery. Examples of battery physical phenomena include mass transport (e.g., diffusion and/or migration) in battery electrolytes, mass transport in battery electrodes, and reactions on battery electrodes.

Claims (26)

1. A method to determine a state of health of a battery and charge the battery via charging circuitry, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising:

(a) applying an electrical signal to at least two terminals of the battery;

(b) from the battery's response to the electrical signal, determining a change over a plurality of charge-discharge cycles, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in (i) an available stored charge in the battery for a given measured voltage, or (ii) a maximum amount of charge that is capable of being stored in the battery; and

(c) based at least in part on the available stored charge or the maximum amount of charge as determined in (b), adjusting one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises adjusting a charge current applied to the battery during a charging process for the battery.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the change, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in the available stored charge in the battery for a given measured voltage comprises determining a change in a voltage-charge curve for the battery.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the change, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in the maximum amount of charge is capable of being stored in the battery for a given measured voltage comprises determining a shift in a voltage-charge curve or relationship with repeated charge-discharge cycles of the battery.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the change, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in the available stored charge in the battery for a given measured voltage comprises determining that the battery has less available stored charge for a defined voltage.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the change, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in the available stored charge in the battery for a given measured voltage comprises determining an impedance and/or a change in impedance of the battery.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises changing an amplitude and/or duration of a charge current applied to the battery during the charging process.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises lowering current applied to the battery during the charging process.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises adjusting a peak charging current.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises applying a plurality of charge signals that decrease in magnitude over time.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises applying a plurality of charge steps that decrease in magnitude over time.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises adjusting the charging process to reduce a terminal voltage of the battery, during the charging process, to a level below a predetermined value and/or a predetermined range.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises adjusting a predetermined value and/or a predetermined range associated with charging the battery.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the predetermined value and/or a predetermined range characterizes an overpotential of the battery, a relaxation time of the battery, and/or a partial relaxation time of the battery.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises controlling, managing, and/or reducing a relaxation time of the battery.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery comprises changing one or more characteristics of the charging process over time or use of the battery.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the battery comprises a plurality of cells.

18. A system for charging a battery including at least two terminals, the system comprising:

charging and/or monitoring circuitry designed or configured to apply a charge signal to the battery; and

control circuitry, coupled to the charging and/or monitoring circuitry designed or configured to cause the system to:

(a) apply an electrical signal to at least two terminals of the battery;

(b) from the battery's response to the electrical signal, determine a change over a plurality of charge-discharge cycles, as the battery ages, degrades or deteriorates, in (i) an available stored charge in the battery for a given measured voltage, or (ii) a maximum amount of charge that is capable of being stored in the battery; and

(c) based at least in part on the available stored charge or the maximum amount of charge as determined in (b), adjust one or more characteristics of a charging process for the battery.
