Ceiling fan having a dual redundant motor mounting assembly
A ceiling fan having a dual redundant motor mounting assembly for suspending a motor comprising a downrod, a hollow motor shaft suspending the motor from the downrod, a retaining pin extending through the hollow motor shaft, and a retaining rod coupled to the retainer pin for redundantly suspending the motor.
1. A ceiling fan having a dual redundant motor mounting assembly for suspending a motor comprising:
a downrod;
a hollow non-rotating motor shaft coupling the motor to the downrod to define a first motor mounting;
a retaining pin, separate from the first motor mounting, carried by the hollow non- rotating motor shaft and extending through the hollow non-rotating motor shaft; and
a retaining rod, at least partially located within the hollow non-rotating motor shaft, and coupled to the retaining pin to define a second or redundant motor mounting.
2. The ceiling fan of claim 1 , wherein a first end of the retaining rod extends at least into the hollow non-rotating motor shaft.
3. The ceiling fan of claim 2 , wherein the retaining rod comprises a first retaining rod aperture at the first end and the retaining pin extends through the first retaining rod aperture.
4. The ceiling fan of claim 3 , wherein the retaining rod comprises a second aperture at a second end for attaching a wire cord for redundantly suspending the hollow non-rotating motor shaft.
5. The ceiling fan of claim 1 , wherein the hollow non-rotating motor shaft comprises a pin aperture and a seat located opposite the pin aperture.
6. The ceiling fan of claim 5 , wherein the pin extends through the pin aperture and an end of the pin rests in the seat.
7. The ceiling fan of claim 1 , wherein the hollow non-rotating motor shaft comprises a first pin aperture positioned on one side of the hollow non-rotating motor shaft and a second pin aperture located on an opposite side of the hollow non-rotating motor shaft as the first pin aperture.
8. The ceiling fan of claim 7 , wherein the retaining pin extends through both the first and second pin apertures.
9. The ceiling fan of claim 1 , further comprising a shaft coupler located on an upper end of the hollow non-rotating motor shaft.
10. The ceiling fan of claim 9 , wherein the shaft coupler comprises a collar having a central opening that receives the hollow non-rotating motor shaft.
11. The ceiling fan of claim 10 , wherein the collar slides over the hollow non-rotating motor shaft.
12. The ceiling fan of claim 11 , further comprise a retaining nut threaded onto a tapped portion of the hollow non-rotating motor shaft for securing the hollow non-rotating motor shaft to the motor for suspending the motor.
13. A ceiling fan having a dual redundant motor mounting assembly for suspending a motor comprising:
a downrod;
a hollow motor shaft coupled to the downrod and suspending the motor from the downrod;
a retainer plate including an opening and positioned at a bottom of the motor housing below the hollow motor shaft; and
a retaining rod coupled to the retainer plate, and passing through the opening and longitudinally along and at least partially through the hollow motor shaft and terminating in a flat mount end;
a support cable terminating in a clevis coupled to the retainer plate and coupled to a structure suspending the motor assembly; and
wherein the flat mount end of the retaining rod is configured to insert into the clevis to couple the retaining rod to the support cable for redundantly suspending the motor.
14. The ceiling fan of claim 13 wherein an end of the retaining rod has a cap that abuts the retainer plate at the opening to carry the retainer plate.
15. The ceiling fan of claim 14 , wherein the retainer plate further comprises a recessed portion adjacent the opening and wherein the recessed portion is configured to seat the cap.
16. The ceiling fan of claim 14 , wherein the support cable extends at least partially through the downrod.
17. The ceiling fan of claim 16 wherein the cap is sized greater than the opening in the retainer plate.
18. The ceiling fan of claim 13 wherein the retainer plate includes an inner portion and an outer portion with the inner portion raised from the outer portion.
19. The ceiling fan of claim 13 , wherein an upper end of the retaining rod is located above an upper end of the hollow motor shaft.
20. The ceiling fan of claim 13 further comprising a shaft coupler coupled to the hollow motor shaft and a downrod plate coupled to the lower end of the downrod, wherein the shaft coupler and downrod plate are secured to each other.
21. The ceiling fan of claim 20 , wherein the shaft coupler is located on an upper end of the hollow motor shaft.
22. The ceiling fan of claim 21 , wherein the shaft coupler comprises a collar having a central opening that receives the hollow motor shaft.
23. The ceiling fan of claim 22 , wherein the collar slides over the hollow motor shaft.
24. The ceiling fan of claim 23 , further comprise a retaining nut threaded onto a tapped portion of the motor shaft for securing the hollow motor shaft to the motor for suspending the motor.
