Abstract

Systems and methods can remove material of interest, including blood clots, from a body region, including but not limited to the circulatory system for the treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), cerebrovascular embolism, and other vascular occlusions.

Claims (33)

1. A material capture system comprising:

a thrombus capture device configured to retrieve a thrombus, and

a catheter comprising:

an elongated body defining a lumen; and

an expandable funnel defining a funnel opening, wherein the thrombus capture device is configured to be received in the lumen and the funnel opening,

wherein a segment of the elongated body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus capture device through the segment.

2. The material capture system of claim 1 , wherein the elongated body comprises an inner layer and an outer layer.

3. The material capture system of claim 2 , wherein the inner layer and the outer layer are formed of a continuous length of material.

4. The material capture system of claim 3 , wherein the continuous length of material defines a fold at the distal end of the expandable funnel.

5. The material capture system of claim 2 , wherein the inner layer comprises an inner braid layer and the outer layer comprises an outer braid layer.

6. The material capture system of claim 5 , further comprising a polymeric layer on the outer braid layer.

7. The material capture system of claim 5 , wherein the polymeric layer is on a distal portion of the outer braid layer and a proximal portion of the outer braid layer does not have the polymeric layer.

8. The material capture system of claim 5 , wherein the inner braid layer has an uncoated surface.

9. The material capture system of claim 1 , wherein the segment is configured to be variably expanded based on an amount of a compressive force applied along the elongate body.

10. The material capture system of claim 1 , wherein the catheter is transformable between a first configuration in which the expandable funnel is compressed and a second configuration in which at least the expandable funnel is expanded.

11. The material capture system of claim 1 , wherein the segment defines a first inner diameter, wherein the thrombus capture device defines a tubular body configured to receive a thrombus, and wherein the segment is configured to expand to a second inner diameter to receive the tubular body and the thrombus captured in the tubular body, the second inner diameter being greater than the first inner diameter, and wherein the segment is configured to recover back to the first inner diameter after passage of the tubular body and the thrombus through the segment.

12. A material capture system comprising:

a thrombus capture device configured to retrieve a thrombus, and

a catheter comprising:

an elongated body defining a lumen, and

a braided funnel defining a funnel opening, wherein the thrombus capture device is configured to be received in the lumen and the funnel opening,

wherein the braided funnel is formed of a continuous length of material defining a fold at a distal end of the braided funnel, and

wherein a segment of the elongated body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus through the segment.

13. The material capture system of claim 12 , wherein the segment is also configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus capture device through the segment.

14. The material capture system of claim 12 , wherein the segment defines a first inner diameter, wherein the thrombus capture device defines a tubular body configured to receive a thrombus, and wherein the segment is configured to expand to a second inner diameter to receive the tubular body and the thrombus captured in the tubular body, the second inner diameter being greater than the first inner diameter, and wherein the segment is configured to recover back to the first inner diameter after passage of the tubular body and the thrombus through the segment.

15. The material capture system of claim 12 , wherein the elongated body and the braided funnel comprise an inner braid layer and an outer braid layer.

16. The material capture system of claim 15 , wherein the inner braid layer and the outer braid layer are formed of a continuous length of braided material that defines a fold at the distal end of the braided funnel.

17. The material capture system of claim 15 , wherein at least part of at least one of the elongated body or the braided funnel comprises a polymeric layer over the outer braid layer.

18. The material capture system of claim 12 , wherein the segment is configured to be variably expanded.

19. The material capture system of claim 12 , wherein the catheter is transformable between a first configuration in which the expandable funnel is compressed and a second configuration in which at least the expandable funnel is expanded.

20. A method comprising:

capturing a thrombus in a basket defined by a thrombus capture device; and

withdrawing the thrombus capture device and the thrombus into a lumen of an elongated body of a catheter through a funnel opening defined by an expandable funnel of the catheter, wherein and a segment of the elongated body proximal to the expandable funnel is configured to expand in response to passage of the thrombus capture device through the segment.
