Abstract

Systems and methods for metering a granular material for packaging in pouches are disclosed. A system includes a hopper structured and arranged to hold a granular material in a hopper cavity. The system also includes a measuring system including a measuring cavity and a tube that is slidable in the hopper cavity between a first position unaligned with the measuring cavity and a second position over and aligned with the measuring cavity. The measuring system is structured and arranged to move a portion of the granular material from the hopper cavity to the measuring cavity when the tube is in the first position. The measuring system is structured and arranged to move the portion of the granular material from the measuring cavity to a pouch making machine using pressurized gas when the tube is in the second position.

Claims (43)

1. A measuring system comprising:

a first component defining a first cavity and a second cavity;

a pair of second components cooperating with the first component to at least partially define an interior region, the pair of second components configured to move to cause motion of a granular material within the interior region;

a tube at least partially within the interior region, the tube configured to move between a first position and a second position, the first cavity configured to receive a portion of the granular material from the interior region when the tube is in the first position;

an actuator coupled to the pair of second components and the tube, the actuator configured to move the tube between the first position and the second position; and

a pressure source configured to be fluidly connected to the first cavity, the pressure source configured to move the portion of the granular material out of the first cavity and through the tube when the tube is in the second position,

in the first position, the tube is axially aligned with the second cavity, and

in the second position, the tube is axially aligned with the first cavity.

2. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a slide connecting the actuator to the pair of second components and the tube, the slide extending between the pair of second components.

3. The measuring system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a tube carrier connecting the tube to the slide component.

4. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a vacuum source configured to be fluidly connected to the first cavity and facilitate movement of the portion of the granular material from the interior region to the first cavity when the tube is in the first position.

5. The measuring system of claim 4 , further comprising:

a three-way valve connected to the first cavity, the pressure source, and the vacuum source.

6. The measuring system of claim 5 , further comprising:

a controller operatively connected to the three-way valve.

7. The measuring system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is an electric motor.

8. The measuring system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is a pneumatic actuator.

9. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first wall; and

a second wall,

wherein the first component, the pair of second components, the first wall, and the second wall define the interior region.

10. The measuring system of claim 9 , wherein the first wall and the second wall are fixed with respect to the first component.

11. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a pin at least partially within the first cavity.

12. The measuring system of claim 11 , wherein an axial position of the pin is adjustable to control a volume of the first cavity configured to receive the portion of the granular material.

13. The measuring system of claim 11 , wherein the pin defines an axial bore configured to be in fluid communication with the pressure source.

14. The measuring system of claim 13 , wherein

the pin defines a first portion of the axial bore and a second portion of the axial bore,

the first portion is cylindrical, and

the second portion is frustoconical, the second portion axially between the cavity and the first portion.

15. The measuring system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a screen between the first cavity and the pin.

16. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an atomized water source configured to be in fluid communication with the first cavity.

17. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a wall defining a conduit,

wherein the conduit and the tube are configured to cooperate to define a flow path for the portion of the granular material when the tube is in the second position.

18. The measuring system of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the first cavity is the same as an inner diameter of the tube.

19. The measuring system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a level sensor configured to detect a level of the granular material in the interior region.
