Abstract

The present invention relates to shaped, bone fiber-based products and methods to make the same.

Claims (29)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A shaped, dehydrated bone fiber-based product, comprising:

a plurality of at least partially demineralized bone fibers,

wherein the average length of the plurality of partially demineralized bone fibers is from about 1 mm to about 200 mm, and

wherein upon rehydration for a period of about 1 hour to about 6 months the bone fiber-based product returns to from about 60% to about 100% of at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of its pre-dehydrated shape, its pre-dehydrated flexibility, its pre-dehydrated compressibility, and combinations thereof.

22 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the void to fiber ratio is from about 1:99 to about 1:11.

23 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the residual moisture content of the product is less than about 6%.

24 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the product is bendable to about 90° when rehydrated.

25 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the product is at least about 90% as intact when rehydrated as before dehydration.

26 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the product when rehydrated remains greater than about 90% intact after being bent, compressed, twisted, squeezed, and/or rolled.

27 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the product is not a putty when rehydrated.

28 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the bone fibers comprise at least one growth factor selected from the group consisting of IGF-1, BMP-2, BMP-4, BMP-7, and combinations thereof.

29 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 28 , wherein the at least one growth factor is native.

30 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 28 , wherein the at least one growth factor is selected from the group consisting of IGF-1 in an amount greater than 60 pg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-2 in an amount greater than 2700 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-4 in an amount greater than 200 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-7 in an amount greater than 9000 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, and combinations thereof.

31 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 21 , wherein the fibers are entangled with at least one material selected from the group consisting of wood, food, plant-based material, at least one elastomer, at least one thermoplastic, and combinations thereof.

32 . A shaped, dehydrated bone fiber-based, comprising:

a plurality of at least partially demineralized bone fibers,

wherein an average length of the plurality of partially demineralized bone fibers is between about 1 and about 200 mm, and

wherein biocompatible materials are entangled within the partially demineralized bone fibers.

33 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the void to fiber ratio is from about 1:99 to about 1:11.

34 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the residual moisture content of the product is less than about 6%.

35 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the product is bendable to about 90° when rehydrated.

36 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the product is at least about 90% as intact when rehydrated as before dehydration.

37 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the product when rehydrated remains greater than about 90% intact after being bent, compressed, twisted, squeezed, and/or rolled.

38 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the product is not a putty when rehydrated.

39 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the bone fibers comprise at least one growth factor selected from the group consisting of IGF-1, BMP-2, BMP-4, BMP-7, and combinations thereof.

40 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 39 , wherein the at least one growth factor is native.

41 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 39 , wherein the at least one growth factor is selected from the group consisting of IGF-1 in an amount greater than 60 pg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-2 in an amount greater than 2700 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-4 in an amount greater than 200 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, BMP-7 in an amount greater than 9000 μg per gram of demineralized bone matrix, and combinations thereof.

42 . The shaped, bone fiber-based product of claim 32 , wherein the fibers are entangled with at least one material selected from the group consisting of wood, food, plant material, at least one elastomer, at least one thermoplastic, and combinations thereof.
