Abstract

A flow regulation device is disclosed. The flow regulation device is fluidly located between a fluid source and a dialysis machine. In some embodiments, the flow regulation device includes an inlet in fluid communication with the fluid source to receive a fluid and an outlet in fluid communication with the dialysis machine to provide the fluid. The flow regulation device also includes a closed volume defined by walls that are configured to expand and contract to provide a variable internal volume. A cross-sectional width of the variable internal volume of the flow regulation device is larger than diameters of the inlet and the outlet to smooth changes in a draw rate of the fluid from the dialysis machine.

Claims (26)

1 . A flow regulation device fluidly located between a fluid source and a dialysis machine, the flow regulation device including:

an inlet in fluid communication with the fluid source to receive a fluid;

an outlet in fluid communication with the dialysis machine to provide the fluid; and

an internal volume defined by elastic walls formed from a compliant material such that the elastic walls expand and contract to provide a variable internal volume, expansion of the elastic walls being caused by an accumulation of the fluid within the internal volume,

wherein a cross-sectional width of the variable internal volume is larger than diameters of the inlet and the outlet to smooth changes in a draw rate of the fluid from the dialysis machine.

2 . The flow regulation device of claim 1 , wherein the compliant material is in sealed communication with the inlet and the outlet such that the fluid contacts the compliant material without passing through the compliant material.

3 . The flow regulation device of claim 2 , wherein the compliant material is configured to expand when the dialysis machine has a lower demand and contract when the dialysis machine has a higher demand.

The flow regulation device of claim 2 , wherein the elastic walls include a first wall and a second wall disposed opposite each other between the inlet and the outlet to define in part the variable internal volume, wherein the first wall and the second wall are composed of the compliant material.

5 . The flow regulation device of claim 4 , wherein the first wall and the second wall move away from each other when the variable internal volume expands and move towards each other when the variable internal volume contracts.

6 . The flow regulation device of claim 1 , wherein the elastic walls include a pleated wall that expands outwardly and contracts inwardly to provide the variable internal volume.

7 . The flow regulation device of claim 1 , wherein the variable internal volume is configured to provide a maximum internal volume between 25 milliliters (“mL”) and 200 mL.

8 . A flow regulation device fluidly located between a fluid source and a dialysis machine, the flow regulation device including:

an inlet in fluid communication with the fluid source to receive a fluid;

an outlet in fluid communication with the dialysis machine to provide the fluid; and

an internal volume defined by at least one elastic wall formed from a compliant material such that the at least one elastic wall expands and contracts to provide a variable internal volume, expansion of the at least one elastic wall being caused by an accumulation of the fluid within the internal volume,

wherein the variable internal volume is configured to expand and retract to smooth changes in a draw rate of the fluid from the dialysis machine.

9 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the compliant material is in sealed communication with the inlet and the outlet such that the fluid contacts the compliant material without passing through the compliant material.

10 . The flow regulation device of claim 9 , wherein the compliant material is configured to expand when the dialysis machine has a lower demand and contract when the dialysis machine has a higher demand.

The flow regulation device of claim 9 , wherein the at least one elastic wall includes a first wall and a second wall disposed opposite each other between the inlet and the outlet to define in part the variable internal volume, wherein the first wall and the second wall are composed of the compliant material.

12 . The flow regulation device of claim 11 , wherein the first wall and the second wall move away from each other when the variable internal volume expands and move towards each other when the variable internal volume contracts.

13 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the at least one elastic wall includes a pleated wall that expands outwardly and contracts inwardly to provide the variable internal volume.

14 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the variable internal volume is configured to provide a maximum internal volume between 25 milliliters (“mL”) and 200 mL.

15 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the fluid includes at least one of purified water or dialysis fluid.

16 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the dialysis machine is a hemodialysis machine or a peritoneal dialysis machine.

17 . The flow regulation device of claim 8 , wherein the fluid source comprises a system for preparing the fluid from a water source.

18 . The flow regulation device of claim 17 , wherein a fluid flow rate from the fluid source is generally equal to an average fluid demand of the dialysis machine.
