Abstract

An AR display compensates for excessive light levels in a location in which the AR display is being used. AR objects are rendered for display on the AR display. Light levels in a location at which an AR object is being rendered for display are monitored. If the light level in the location exceeds the threshold light level, a light source in the location is identified and light emissions from the identified light source are mitigated.

Claims (76)

1 . A method for compensating for excessive light levels when using an augmented reality (AR) display, the method comprising:

rendering AR objects for display on the AR display;

monitoring a light level in a location at which an AR object is being rendered for display on the AR display;

determining whether the light level in the location exceeds a threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the light level in the location exceeds the threshold light level:

identifying a light source in the location; and

mitigating light emissions from the light source.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying a light source in the location further comprises:

measuring light levels at a plurality of positions within the location;

comparing, for each respective position of the plurality of positions, the light level measured at the respective position with the threshold light level; and

determining, based on the comparing, that the light level measured at a first position exceeds the threshold light level.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising storing an indication of a light source in association with an identifier of the first position.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying a type of the light source.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the type of light source is a light fixture, and wherein mitigating light emissions from the light source further comprises:

accessing a controller of the light fixture; and

decreasing light output from the light fixture using the controller.

6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the type of light source is a window, and wherein mitigating light emissions from the light source further comprises:

accessing a controller of a shade associated with the window; and

covering the window with the shade using the controller.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a spatial map of an area that includes the location;

measuring respective light levels at a plurality of positions within the area; and

storing the respective light levels in the spatial map in association with respective corresponding positions of the plurality of positions.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

periodically remeasuring light levels at the plurality of positions corresponding to the stored light levels; and

updating the spatial map to include current levels at each position of the plurality of positions.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring an average light level in an area that includes the location;

determining, after mitigating light emissions from the light source, whether the light level in the location is at or below the threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the light level at the location still exceeds the threshold light level:

determining whether the average light level in the area exceeds a second threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the average light level in the area exceeds the second threshold light level, mitigating light emissions from a second light source.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein mitigating light emissions from a second light source further comprises:

identifying a plurality of light sources within the area;

determining a respective light level of each light source of the plurality of light sources;

identifying, as the second light source, a light source having a highest respective light level; and

decreasing light output from the second light source.

11 . A system for compensating for excessive light levels when using an augmented reality (AR) display, the system comprising:

light detection circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

render AR objects for display on the AR display;

monitor, using the light detection circuitry, a light level in a location at which an AR object is being rendered for display on the AR display;

determine whether the light level in the location exceeds a threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the light level in the location exceeds the threshold light level:

identify a light source in the location; and

mitigate light emissions from the light source.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to identify a light source in the location is further configured to:

measure light levels at a plurality of positions within the location;

compare, for each respective position of the plurality of positions, the light level measured at the respective position with the threshold light level; and

determine, based on the comparing, that the light level measured at a first position exceeds the threshold light level.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to store an indication of a light source in association with an identifier of the first position.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to identify a type of the light source.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the type of light source is a light fixture, and wherein the control circuitry configured to mitigate light emissions from the light source is further configured to:

access a controller of the light fixture; and

decrease light output from the light fixture using the controller.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the type of light source is a window, and wherein the control circuitry configured to mitigate light emissions from the light source is further configured to:

access a controller of a shade associated with the window; and

cover the window with the shade using the controller.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate a spatial map of an area that includes the location;

measure respective light levels at a plurality of positions within the area; and

store the respective light levels in the spatial map in association with respective corresponding positions of the plurality of positions.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

periodically remeasure light levels at the plurality of positions corresponding to the stored light levels; and

update the spatial map to include current levels at each position of the plurality of positions.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

measure an average light level in an area that includes the location;

determine, after mitigating light emissions from the light source, whether the light level in the location is at or below the threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the light level at the location still exceeds the threshold light level:

determine whether the average light level in the area exceeds a second threshold light level; and

in response to determining that the average light level in the area exceeds the second threshold light level, mitigate light emissions from a second light source.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the control circuitry configured to mitigate light emissions from a second light source is further configured to:

identify a plurality of light sources within the area;

determine a respective light level of each light source of the plurality of light sources;

identify, as the second light source, a light source having a highest respective light level; and

decrease light output from the second light source.
