Abstract

A system designed for increasing network communication speed for users, while lowering network congestion for content owners and ISPs. The system employs network elements including an acceleration server, clients, agents, and peers, where communication requests generated by applications are intercepted by the client on the same machine. The IP address of the server in the communication request is transmitted to the acceleration server, which provides a list of agents to use for this IP address. The communication request is sent to the agents. One or more of the agents respond with a list of peers that have previously seen some or all of the content which is the response to this request (after checking whether this data is still valid). The client then downloads the data from these peers in parts and in parallel, thereby speeding up the Web transfer, releasing congestion from the Web by fetching the information from multiple sources, and relieving traffic from Web servers by offloading the data transfers from them to nearby peers.

Claims (42)

1. A method for use with a group of client devices, each located in a respective geographical location, for use with a web server storing a web-page that is identified by a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), for retrieving, by a consumer communication device, the web-page, and for use with a server device that stores a respective Internet Protocol (IP) address of each of the client devices in the group, the method comprising:

sending, by the consumer communication device to the server device over the Internet, a first geographical location;

receiving, by the consumer communication device from the server device over the Internet, in response to the sending of the first geographical location, a first IP address of a first client device from the group that is located in the first geographical location;

sending, by the consumer communication device to the first client device over the Internet, using the first IP address, a first Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request;

sending, by the consumer communication device to the server device over the Internet, a second geographical location;

receiving, by the consumer communication device from the server device over the Internet, in response to the sending of the second geographical location, a second IP address of a second client device from the group that is located in the second geographical location; and

sending, by the consumer communication device to the second client device over the Internet, using the second IP address, a second Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request,

wherein the server device is not a client device.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the consumer communication device over the Internet, the web-page from the web server using the selected first or second client device.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising storing, by the selected first or second client device, the received web-page.

4. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the consumer communication device to the selected first or second client over the Internet, the URL.

5. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising communicating, by the selected first or second client with the web server over the Internet.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising selecting, by the server device, of the first or second client device, based on the IP address of the web server or the URL.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the selecting of the first or second client device is further based on the IP address of the selected client device.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the server device, a communication initiated by each of the client devices in the group.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising storing, in the server device, the respective Internet Protocol (IP) address of each of the client devices in the group, in response to the receiving of the communication initiated by each of the client devices in the group.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the communication initiated by each of the client devices in the group uses a TCP/IP protocol or connection.

11. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server device from the consumer communication device over the Internet, the first geographical location;

comparing, by the server device, the received first geographical location with the respective geographical location of each of the client devices in the group;

selecting, by the server device, in response to the comparing, the first client device from the group that is located in the first geographical location;

sending, by the server device to the consumer communication device over the Internet, the first IP address of the first client device;

receiving, by the server device from the consumer communication device over the Internet, the second geographical location;

comparing, by the server device, the received second geographical location with the respective geographical location of each of the client devices in the group;

selecting, by the server device, in response to the comparing, the second client device from the group that is located in the second geographical location; and

sending, by the server device to the consumer communication device over the Internet, the second IP address of the second client device.

12. The method according to claim 1 , further for use with a second web server storing a second web-page identified by a second URL, the method further comprising:

sending, by one of the client devices in the group to the server device over the Internet, the second URL;

sending, by the server device to the one of the client devices over the Internet, the IP address of the consumer communication device;

receiving, by the consumer communication device from the second web server over the Internet, the second web-page; and

receiving, by the one of the client devices from the consumer communication device over the Internet, the second web-page.

The method according to claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the consumer communication device to the selected first or second client over the Internet, a communication port number, and communicating between the consumer communication device and the respective selected client using the communication port number.

14. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the consumer communication device to the server device over the Internet, the URL, and selecting, by the server device, of the first or second client device, in response to the receiving, of the URL by the server device.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the communication with the consumer communication device or with the selected first or second client is based on, or according to, UDP, DNS, TCP, FTP, POP 3, SMTP, or SQL standard.

The method according to claim 1 , further comprising executing, by the consumer communication device, a browser or an email application; and sending, by the consumer communication device to the server device over the Internet, an identifier in the Internet of the consumer communication device or the URL, as part of, or in response to, the executing.

The method according to claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the consumer communication device to the server device over the Internet, an identifier in the Internet of the consumer communication device; and storing, by the server device, the received identifier of the consumer communication device.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the web server is Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server that responds to HTTP requests from the selected first or second client device.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the server device is HTTP server and responds to HTTP requests from the consumer communication device.

20. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the web server is Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) server and communicates based on, or according to, using TCP/IP protocol or connection.

21. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the web-page comprises audio or video content.

22. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the server device is identified using a Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

23. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the communication with the server device is based on, or according to, UDP, DNS, TCP, FTP, POP #, SMTP, or SQL standard.
