Abstract

One embodiment of a technique for generating an image for a geographic location comprises receiving a current geographic location of a mobile device. The technique also includes obtaining a plurality of candidate templates, each candidate template associated with a geographic usage location defining a geographic area to which the candidate template applies. The technique also includes identifying a candidate template with a geographic usage location that matches the current geographic location of the mobile device as an identified template. The technique further includes receiving, from the mobile device, a modified image, the modified image combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and a source image captured on the mobile device at the current geographic location of the mobile device. The technique further includes, in response to receiving the modified image from the mobile device, automatically distributing the modified image to ones of a plurality of other devices.

Claims (69)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program codes that when executed on a processor of a server device render the server device operable to:

receive a current geographic location of a mobile device;

obtain a plurality of candidate templates, each candidate template associated with a geographic usage location defining a geographic area to which the candidate template applies;

identify a candidate template with a geographic usage location that matches the current geographic location of the mobile device as an identified template;

send to the mobile device the identified template;

receive, from the mobile device, a modified image, the modified image combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and a source image captured on the mobile device at the current geographic location of the mobile device, wherein an area of the identified template is less than an area of the source image, and the identified template is positioned on or within boundaries of the source image and obscures one or more parts of the source image over which the identified template is overlayed; and

in response to receiving the modified image from the mobile device, automatically distribute the modified image to ones of a plurality of other devices.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein to receive, from the mobile device, the modified image, the mobile device having:

presented on a display of the mobile device, the identified template;

presented on the display, a control operable to receive user input indicating acceptance of the identified template; and

received the user input indicating acceptance of the identified template.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the current geographic location received from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI), and the POI is one or more of a: restaurant, bar, gas station, sports arena, school, building, museum, and historic landmark.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the current geographic location received from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI), the POI being a business establishment and the identified template including one or more of a name of the business establishment and a logo representing the business establishment.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the current geographic location received from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI) POW that is a business establishment, and wherein the identified template provided by the server device by the business establishment is provided by a template server.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the server device is further operable to:

receive the candidate template from a template contributing device; and

store, in a database, the candidate template.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 wherein order to receive the candidate template from the template contributing device and store the candidate template in the database, the server device is further operable to:

receive metadata identifying how the candidate template can be used; and

store, in the database, the metadata identifying how the candidate template can be used, the metadata including information identifying one or more of:

a total number of times the modified image may be used,

a total time duration under which the modified image may be used,

a frequency of use of the modified image,

one or more destination geographic locations at which the modified image may be used,

one or more usage geographic locations at which the identified template may be used,

a social distance between a user of the mobile device and any other users of a plurality of other devices receiving the modified image,

and information identifying one or more third-party sites on which the modified image may appear.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 where in order to identify the candidate template and send the identified template the server device is further operable to:

identify a plurality of candidate templates that match the current geographic location of the mobile device; and

send to the mobile device a plurality of candidate templates.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , where in order to identify the candidate template the server device is further operable to:

identify the candidate template based on a user profile of a user associated with the mobile device, wherein the user profile includes one or more of gender and age.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the source image is captured in response to inputs received by a user of the mobile device.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the identified template is a textual description reflecting the current geographic location of the mobile device, and the source image is captured at the current geographic location of the mobile device.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein a user of the mobile device, and other users of the plurality of other devices are members of a social network operated by a social network service, and in distributing the modified image to the ones of a plurality of other devices the server device is further operable to:

send a check-in message including the modified image to the ones of the plurality of other devices.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program codes that when executed on a processor of a mobile device render the mobile device operable to:

capture a source image at a current geographic location of the mobile device;

send, to a server device, the current geographic location at which the source image was captured;

receive, from the server device, an identified template, the identified template associated with a geographic usage location that matched the current geographic location at which the source image was captured by the mobile device;

generate a modified image by combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and the source image, wherein an area of the identified template is less than an area of the source image, and the identified template is positioned on or within boundaries of the source image and obscures one or more parts of the source image over which the identified template is overlayed; and

send, to the server device for automatic distribution to ones of a plurality of other devices in response to receiving the modified image from the mobile device, the modified image.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 wherein to generate the modified image by combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and the source image the mobile device is operable to:

present on a display of the mobile device, the identified template;

present on the display, a control operable to receive user input indicating acceptance of the identified template; and

receive the user input indicating acceptance of the identified template.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the current geographic location sent from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI), and the POI is one or more of a: restaurant, bar, gas station, sports arena, school, building, museum, and historic landmark.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the current geographic location sent from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI), the POI being a business establishment and the identified template including one or more of a name of the business establishment and a logo representing the business establishment.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the current geographic location sent from the mobile device corresponds to a check-in zone for a Point of Interest (POI) POW that is a business establishment, and wherein the identified template provided by the server device by the business establishment is provided by a template server.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the identified template is a textual description reflecting the current geographic location of the mobile device, and the source image is captured at the current geographic location of the mobile device.

19. A mobile device comprising:

a network interface operable to:

couple the mobile device to a server device; and

a processor and memory associated with the network interface and operable to:

capture a source image at a current geographic location of the mobile device;

send, to the server device, the current geographic location at which the source image was captured;

receive, from the server device, an identified template, the identified template associated with a geographic usage location that matched the current geographic location at which the source image was captured by the mobile device;

generate a modified image by combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and the source image, wherein an area of the identified template is less than an area of the source image and the identified template is positioned on or within boundaries of the source image and obscures one or more parts of the source image over which the identified template is overlayed; and

send, to the server device for automatic distribution to ones of a plurality of other devices in response to receiving the modified image from the mobile device, the modified image.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 wherein the identified template is positioned on the source image according to placement information associated with the identified template.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of candidate templates are tagged with location information identifying one or more geographic locations at which the identified template is available to be used.

22. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing program codes that when executed on a processor of a mobile device render the mobile device operable to:

capture a source image at a current geographic location of the mobile device;

send, to a server device, the current geographic location at which the source image was captured;

receive, from the server device, a plurality of candidate templates, the plurality of identified templates associated with a geographic usage location that matched the current geographic location at which the source image was captured by the mobile device;

present on a display of the mobile device, a control operable to receive user input designating one of the plurality of candidate templates as an identified template; and

receive the user input designating one of the plurality of identified templates as the identified template;

generate a modified image by combining in an overlapping fashion the identified template and the source image; and

automatically send, to the server device, a check-in message, the check-in message including the modified image for distribution to one of more friends of a user of the mobile device, wherein the server device operates a social network and the one or more friends of the user of the mobile device are friends in the social network.
