Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for responding to a sleep-state event. One example method includes receiving and generating, at a computing device, media content for output and receiving a sleep-state event. A type of the content being generated for output is identified and, based on the type of content, an action to perform in response to receiving the sleep-state event is identified. The action to perform is generated.

Claims (77)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a computing device, first media content;

generating for output, at the computing device, the first media content;

receiving a first sleep-state event;

identifying that the first sleep-state event indicates a light sleep-state;

identifying a type of the first content being generated for output;

identifying, based on the type of the first media content, an action to perform in response to identifying that the first sleep-state event indicates a light sleep-state, wherein the action to perform comprises selecting second media content for aiding sleep;

receiving, at the computing device, the second media content;

generating for output, at the computing device, the second media content;

receiving a second sleep-state event;

identifying that the second sleep-state event indicates a deep sleep state; and

in response to identifying that the second sleep-state event indicates a deep sleep state:

stopping generating the second media content for output; and

changing a state of the computing device from an active state to an inactive state, wherein changing the state of the computing device to the inactive state comprises one of turning off the of the computing device or putting the computing device into a low power mode.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein:

a user profile is identified; and

the action to perform further comprises updating a viewing history associated with the identified user profile to indicate a resume point based on the generated bookmark.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein:

the first media content comprises metadata indicating a priority segment; and

the action to perform further comprises identifying whether the generated bookmark occurs at or before the priority segment, wherein the resume point is further based on a time stamp of the priority segment.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first media content is an episode of a series of episodes; and

the action to perform comprises disabling the automatic playing of a subsequent episode of the series of episodes.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the first sleep-state event comprises receiving the first sleep-state event from a first or a second user;

identifying, based on whether the first sleep-state event was received from the first user or the second user, a user profile associated with the first user or the second user; and

wherein the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event and updating a viewing history associated with the identified user profile to indicate a resume point based on the generated bookmark.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first media content is live media content that is received in, at least substantially, real time;

the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event;

and wherein the method further comprises:

identifying a user profile;

associating the bookmark with the user profile;

identifying that the live media content subsequently becomes available to stream in a video-on-demand format;

generating, for output, an indication that the first media content is available to stream in a video-on-demand format that indicates a start point of the video-on-demand media content based on the bookmark.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the type of the first media content is a favorited media content item.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the action to perform comprises stopping the output of a section of the first media content comprising strobing.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the light sleep-state indicates that a user is in slow-wave sleep and the deep sleep-slate indicates that the user is in delta sleep.

11. A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

receive, at a computing device, first media content;

processing circuitry configured to:

generate for output, at the computing device, the first media content;

receive a first sleep-state event;

identify that the first sleep-state event indicates a light sleep-state;

identify a type of the first content being generated for output;

identify, based on the type of the first media content, an action to perform in response to identifying that the first sleep-state event indicates a light sleep-state, wherein the action to perform comprises selecting second media content for aiding sleep;

receive, at the computing device, the second media content;

generate for output, at the computing device, the second media content;

receive a second sleep-state event;

identify that the second sleep-state event indicates a deep sleep state; and

in response to identifying that the second sleep-state event indicates a deep sleep state:

stop generating the second media content for output; and

change a state of the computing device from an active state to an inactive state, wherein changing the state of the computing device to the inactive state comprises one of turning off the of the computing device or putting the computing device into a low power mode.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to identify a user profile and wherein the action to perform further comprises updating a viewing history associated with the identified user profile to indicate a resume point based on the generated bookmark.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein:

the first media content comprises metadata indicating a priority segment; and

the action to perform further comprises identifying whether the generated bookmark occurs at or before the priority segment, wherein the resume point is further based on a time stamp of the priority segment.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the first media content is an episode of a series of episodes; and

the action to perform comprises disabling the automatic playing of a subsequent episode of the series of episodes.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the processing circuitry configured to receive the first sleep-state event is further configured to receive the first sleep-state event from a first user or a second user;

the processing circuitry is further configured to identify, based on whether the first sleep-state event was received from the first user or the second user, a user profile associated with the first user or the second user; and

wherein the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event and updating a viewing history associated with the identified user profile to indicate a resume point based on the generated bookmark.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the processing circuitry configured to receive the first media content is further configured to receive live media content that is received in, at least substantially, real time;

the action to perform comprises generating a bookmark in response to receiving the first sleep-state event;

and wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

identify a user profile;

associate the bookmark with the user profile;

identify that the live media content subsequently becomes available to stream in a video-on-demand format;

generate, for output, an indication that the first media content is available to stream in a video-on-demand format that indicates a start point of the video-on-demand media content based on the bookmark.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the type of the first media content is a favorited media content item.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the action to perform comprises stopping the output of a section of the first media content comprising strobing.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the light sleep-state indicates that a user is in slow-wave sleep and the deep sleep-slate indicates that the user is in delta sleep.
