Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for indicating the presence of a directional differential pressure between separated adjacent spaces are provided. A differential pressure set point indicator may be configured to correlate multiple potential angles of inclination of an elongated conduit to respective threshold differential pressures between two spaces which generate net flow of fluid sufficient to cause a lightweight ball to move from one region of the conduit to an opposing region. The elongated conduit may be adjustable in length so as to accommodate installation of the device into walls of varying thickness. The device may include a sound attenuator that reduces noise upon impact of the ball with either end of the conduit. The device may also include a sealing material that is flexible yet firm enough to provide both a seal with the exterior surface of the conduit and support for the conduit when oriented in a tilted configuration.

Claims (40)

1. A device for detecting directional differential pressure between a first space and a second space, comprising:

a conduit configured to be coupled with a wall separating the first space from the second space, the conduit configured to be inclined with respect to a horizontal reference plane such that a first region of the conduit is vertically lower than a second, vertically higher region of the conduit;

a movable element disposed within the conduit configured to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region in response to differential pressure between the first space and the second space;

a first end stop configured to be secured to the conduit, wherein the first end stop includes a first opening configured to allow fluid in the conduit to flow through the first opening, wherein the first opening has a first size corresponding to a first threshold differential pressure setpoint, wherein the first threshold differential pressure setpoint is a differential pressure that is sufficient to cause the movable element to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region when the first end stop is secured to the conduit; and

a second end stop configured to be secured to the conduit, wherein the second end stop includes a second opening configured to allow fluid in the conduit to flow through the second opening, wherein the second opening has a second size different than the first size corresponding to a second threshold differential pressure setpoint different than the first threshold differential pressure setpoint, wherein the second threshold differential pressure setpoint is a differential pressure that is sufficient to cause the movable element to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region when the second end stop is secured to the conduit.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first opening has a first width, and wherein the second opening has a second width wider than the first width to allow a greater flow rate of fluid through the second opening relative to the first opening.

3. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an indicator that responds to gravity to indicate at least one inclination angle of the conduit with respect to the horizontal reference plane.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the indicator is attached to the conduit.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the indicator comprises a pointer, wherein the pointer includes at least one of a group of a bubble vial, a pivotally arranged member, a pendulum, a weighted member and a tip, and a weighted ball in a vial.

6. The device of claim 5 , further comprising a marking configured to provide differential pressure set point information when the pointer is aligned with the marking.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first end stop includes a first marking that indicates the first threshold differential pressure setpoint, and wherein the second end stop includes a second marking that indicates the second threshold differential pressure setpoint.

8. The device of claim 7 , further comprising a table listing threshold differential pressure set points; wherein the first marking and the second marking each include an alphanumeric value which the table references.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an alarm configured to sound when the movable element is disposed in the first, vertically lower region of the conduit.

10. A device for detecting directional differential pressure between a first space and a second space, comprising:

a conduit configured to be coupled with a wall separating the first space from the second space, the conduit having openings that permit fluid flow through the conduit from the first space to the second space, the conduit configured to be inclined with respect to a horizontal reference plane such that a first region of the conduit is vertically lower than a second, vertically higher region of the conduit; and

a plurality of movable elements, each movable element having a size different from the others of the plurality of movable elements, and each movable element being configured to be placed in the conduit, and each movable element corresponding to a different threshold differential pressure set point, the threshold differential pressure set point representing a differential pressure between the first space and the second space that is sufficient to cause the movable element disposed within the conduit to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of movable elements is a ball.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein each movable element has a diameter different from the others of the plurality of movable elements.

13. The device of claim 10 , wherein each movable element of the plurality of movable elements is configured to provide a set point indication of the threshold differential pressure set point to which the movable element corresponds.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of movable elements each include a marking that indicates the respective threshold differential pressure set point.

15. The device of claim 14 , further comprising a table listing threshold differential pressure set points; wherein:

each of the plurality of movable elements is a ball; and

the marking on each ball includes an alphanumeric value which the table references.

16. The device of claim 10 , wherein each movable element has a weight different from the others of the plurality of movable elements.

17. The device of claim 10 , wherein each movable element has a surface finish different from the others of the plurality of movable elements.

18. The device of claim 10 , further comprising an indicator that responds to gravity to indicate at least one inclination angle of the conduit with respect to the horizontal reference plane.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the indicator is attached to the conduit.

20. The device of claim 18 , wherein the indicator comprises a pointer, wherein the pointer includes at least one of a group of a bubble vial, a pivotally arranged member, a pendulum, a weighted member and a tip, and a weighted ball in a vial.

21. The device of claim 10 , further comprising an alarm configured to sound when a movable element of the plurality of movable elements is disposed in the first, vertically lower region of the conduit.

22. A device for detecting directional differential pressure between a first space and a second space, comprising:

a plurality of conduits each configured to be coupled with a wall separating the first space from the second space, each conduit having a orifice with a size different from the others of the plurality of conduits, each conduit of the plurality of conduits having openings that permit fluid flow through the conduit from the first space to the second space, each conduit of the plurality of conduits configured to be inclined with respect to a horizontal reference plane such that a first region of the conduit is vertically lower than a second, vertically higher region of the conduit, and each conduit corresponding to a different threshold differential pressure set point, wherein one of the plurality of conduits is coupled with the wall to establish the threshold differential pressure set point of the device; and

a movable element disposed within the one conduit of the plurality of conduits that is coupled with the wall, wherein the movable element is configured to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region in response to differential pressure between the first space and the second space, wherein the threshold differential pressure set point for each conduit represents a differential pressure between the first space and the second space that is sufficient to cause the movable element disposed within the conduit to move from the first, vertically lower region of the conduit to the second, vertically higher region.

23. The device of claim 22 , wherein each conduit of the plurality of conduits is configured to provide a set point indication of the threshold differential pressure set point to which the conduit corresponds.

24. The device of claim 22 , wherein each conduit has a lumen with a diameter different from the others of the plurality of conduits.

25. The device of claim 22 , wherein each conduit has a lumen with a curvature different from the others of the plurality of conduits.

26. The device of claim 22 , wherein each conduit has a lumen with a surface finish different from the others of the plurality of conduits.

27. The device of claim 22 , further comprising an indicator that responds to gravity to indicate at least one inclination angle of the conduit with respect to the horizontal reference plane.

28. The device of claim 27 , wherein the indicator is attached to the conduit.

29. The device of claim 27 , wherein the indicator comprises a pointer, wherein the pointer includes at least one of a group of a bubble vial, a pivotally arranged member, a pendulum, a weighted member and a tip, and a weighted ball in a vial.

30. The device of claim 22 , further comprising an alarm configured to sound when the movable element is disposed in the first, vertically lower region of the conduit.
