Abstract

A system and method for presenting video asset information to a viewer to assist the view in selecting a video asset for viewing is described. The video assets can be available from a plurality of different video asset sources, such as VOD (video on demand), PVR (personal video recorders) and broadcast (including over the air, cable, and satellite). Images from the video assets are displayed in a uniform manner, along with information about the video assets. The information includes data in a metadata category. The view can select one of the video assets for viewing, but also can navigate using metadata categories such as genre, actors, director etc. Moreover, the system and method includes an on-screen remote control that can be utilized in conjunction with a physical input device for navigation and viewing one or more video assets. This allows a much easier and natural navigating and selection process for viewers.

Claims (34)

1 .- 24 . (canceled)

25 . A method comprising:

generating for simultaneous display on a display device a display screen including:

a plurality of links selectable via a user interface for each of a plurality of video asset sources, respectively, wherein the plurality of video asset sources includes: a video-on-demand source, a currently showing source, a personal video recorder source, and a future broadcast video asset source, and wherein each link includes an association with metadata and a video asset; and

a symbol corresponding to an indicator unique to each of the plurality of video asset sources.

26 . The method of claim 25 , comprising:

in response to initiation of an enhanced remote control operation that is not supported by a physical remote control, generating for display an on-screen remote.

27 . The method of claim 25 , further comprising:

receiving, at a server, programming data related to the plurality of video assets over a network from at least one source of the plurality of video asset sources; and

in response to a selection of one of the plurality of links, performing an action appropriate for the video asset source corresponding to the selected video asset.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the action includes at least one of buying the selected video asset, displaying a preview or trailer of the selected video asset, or displaying information about the selected video asset.

29 . The method of claim 25 , wherein each link includes an image based on the respective video asset.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the image is clipped from the respective video asset.

31 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the image is a moving image.

32 . The method of claim 25 , wherein each of the plurality of links is selectable via a straightforward remote control having a plurality of navigation buttons and a select or activate button, and without need for a complex remote control.

33 . The method of claim 32 , wherein the plurality of navigation buttons include a navigate up button, a navigate down button, a navigate left button, and a navigate right button.

34 . The method of claim 25 , wherein display screen includes results of a search for assets that share at least a portion of the metadata.

35 . A system comprising:

circuitry configured to:

generating for simultaneous display on a display device a display screen including:

a plurality of links selectable via a user interface for each of a plurality of video asset sources, respectively, wherein the plurality of video asset sources includes: a video-on-demand source, a currently showing source, a personal video recorder source, and a future broadcast video asset source, and wherein each link includes an association with metadata and a video asset; and

a symbol corresponding to an indicator unique to each of the plurality of video asset sources.

36 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the circuitry is configured to:

in response to initiation of an enhanced remote control operation that is not supported by a physical remote control, generate for display an on-screen remote.

37 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the circuitry is configured to:

receive, at a server, programming data related to the plurality of video assets over a network from at least one source of the plurality of video asset sources; and

in response to a selection of one of the plurality of links, perform an action appropriate for the video asset source corresponding to the selected video asset.

38 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the action includes at least one of buying the selected video asset, displaying a preview or trailer of the selected video asset, or displaying information about the selected video asset.

39 . The system of claim 35 , wherein each link includes an image based on the respective video asset.

40 . The system of claim 39 , wherein the image is clipped from the respective video asset.

41 . The system of claim 39 , wherein the image is a moving image.

42 . The system of claim 35 , wherein each of the plurality of links is selectable via a straightforward remote control having a plurality of navigation buttons and a select or activate button, and without need for a complex remote control.

43 . The system of claim 42 , wherein the plurality of navigation buttons include a navigate up button, a navigate down button, a navigate left button, and a navigate right button.

44 . The system of claim 45 , wherein the display screen includes results of a search for assets that share at least a portion of the metadata.
