Abstract

Currently, user devices in a 5G/6G wireless network must perform a complex iteration procedure to align their directional transmission/reception beams toward the base station. Disclosed is a faster, simpler procedure to enable users with beamforming capability to align their beams. The base station transmits a series of sequential signals, all with the same amplitude, modulation, and spatial distribution. A user device can receive the signals using directional reception beams oriented in various directions, measuring the signal quality for each of the reception beams. The user device can then select the reception beam with the best signal quality, or it can interpolate between the two best beams to determine the optimal alignment direction toward the base station. A single user device (such as a new arrival) can align its beam, or all of the user devices in the network can optimize their beams simultaneously, saving time at very low resource cost.

Claims (21)

1. A user device of a wireless network comprising a base station, the user device configured to:

a) receive an alignment message comprising message elements, each message element comprising one resource element of a resource grid, wherein all of the alignment message elements are transmitted, sequentially in time, with a same amplitude, phase, and spatial distribution;

b) for each message element, prepare a different reception beam aligned in a different direction;

c) measure a received amplitude or signal quality of each message element as received using each reception beam;

d) compare the measured amplitudes or signal qualities and thereby determine which particular message element was received with a highest amplitude or signal quality;

e) determine which particular reception beam was used to receive the particular message element; and

f) transmit an acknowledgement message to the base station using a transmission beam aligned opposite to the particular reception beam.

2. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the alignment message and the acknowledgement message are transmitted according to 5G technology.

3. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the alignment message is transmitted according to a predetermined transmission beam aimed at the user device.

4. The user device of claim 1 , wherein the acknowledgement message comprises an indication of the highest measured amplitude or signal quality.

5. The user device of claim 4 , further configured to receive a data message, before receiving the alignment message, wherein the data message indicates a suggested direction toward the base station from the user device.

6. The user device of claim 5 , wherein:

a) the user device is further configured to determine, before receiving the data message, a direction comprising geographical north; and

b) wherein the data message indicates the suggested direction toward the base station from the user device, as an angle relative to geographical north.

7. The user device of claim 6 , further configured to measure, using an electronic compass, geographical north or a direction related to geographical north.

8. The user device of claim 1 , further configured to:

a) determine that a particular two message elements were received with a two highest amplitudes or signal qualities;

b) determine which particular two reception beams were used to receive the particular two message elements; and

c) calculate a third reception beam by interpolating between the particular two reception beams.

9. The user device of claim 1 , further configured to transmit, to the base station, before receiving the alignment message, a capability message indicating that the user device has a beamforming capability.

10. The user device of claim 9 , wherein the capability message is transmitted non-directionally.
