Abstract

An apparatus and a method are provided for a surgical bending instrument for bending surgical implants. The surgical bending instrument comprises a body including a longitudinally extending threaded hole. A shaft comprising a threaded portion is rotatably engaged within the threaded hole. A handle is coupled to a proximal end of the shaft, and a distal extension of the shaft comprises a driver. A distal force applicator comprises the driver centered between a first grip and a second grip. In some embodiments, the distal force applicator is configured to retain a surgical staple, such that the surgical staple may be changed to a distracted configuration suitable for implantation at a bone fixation or fusion site of a patient. In some embodiments, the distal force applicator is configured to bend a bone fusion plate so as to tailor the plate to specific anatomy of the patient's bone.

Claims (22)

1. A surgical bending instrument for fixating osteotomies and joint arthrodesis of the hands and feet, comprising:

a first grip and a second grip for retaining a surgical staple;

a driver for distracting the surgical staple; and

a proximal handle for moving the driver.

2. The surgical bending instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first grip and the second grip are coupled with a body that orients the first grip and the second grip to receive a crown of the surgical staple.

3. The surgical bending instrument of claim 2 , wherein the first grip and the second grip share a separation distance comparable with the length of the crown.

4. The surgical bending instrument of claim 2 , wherein the driver is oriented within the body so as to exert a force onto the crown in opposition to forces on the crown due to the first grip and the second grip.

5. The surgical bending instrument of claim 4 , wherein the first grip and the second grip contact underneath opposite ends of the crown while the driver contacts the top at the midpoint of the crown.

6. The surgical bending instrument of claim 5 , wherein the first grip and the second grip receive the crown on the same side of the surgical staple.

7. The surgical bending instrument of claim 5 , wherein the first grip and the second grip receive the crown on opposite sides of the surgical staple.

8. The surgical bending instrument of claim 5 , wherein the driver is configured to move longitudinally with respect to the first grip and the second grip when the proximal handle is moved.

9. The surgical bending instrument of claim 1 , wherein the proximal handle comprises a shaft that extends through the body to the driver.

10. The surgical bending instrument of claim 9 , wherein the driver comprises a distal end of the shaft.

11. The surgical bending instrument of claim 9 , wherein the shaft includes a distal end that presses against the driver.

12. The surgical bending instrument of claim 1 , wherein the proximal handle comprises a lever that includes a cam that presses against the driver.

13. The surgical bending instrument of claim 12 , wherein the cam distracts the surgical staple when the lever is pulled proximally.

14. The surgical bending instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first grip and the second grip are configured to engage with a first end and a second end of a crown of the surgical staple.

15. The surgical bending instrument of claim 14 , wherein the first grip and the second grip are configured to engage with wing portions disposed at opposite ends of the crown and extending beyond a first leg and a second leg of the surgical staple.

16. The surgical bending instrument of claim 15 , wherein the wing portions are configured to distract the surgical staple when the driver exerts a force on the top of the middle of the crown.

17. The surgical bending instrument of claim 14 , wherein the first grip and the second grip are configured to engage with wing portions disposed at opposite ends of the crown and extending beyond a first transverse portion and a second transverse portion of the surgical staple.

18. The surgical bending instrument of claim 17 , wherein the first transverse portion couples a first leg and a second leg with a first end of the crown.

19. The surgical bending instrument of claim 18 , wherein the second transverse portion couples a third leg and a fourth leg with a second end of the crown.
