Abstract

A method for evaluating a biological material for unassociated virus-size particles having a particular epitope uses a fluorescent antibody stain specific for binding with the epitope and a fluid sample with the virus-size particles and fluorescent antibody stain is subjected to flow cytometry with identification of fluorescent emission detection events indicative of passage through a flow cell of a flow cytometer of unassociated labeled particles of virus size including such a virus-size particle and fluorescent antibody stain.

Claims (12)

1. A method for making a fluorescent antibody stain for staining virus-size particles having a target epitope, the method comprising:

in an aqueous liquid medium at a pH of from pH 7 to pH 8, attaching, directly or indirectly, multiple ones of a fluorophore group comprising a fluorophore to antibody molecules targeted to bind with the target epitope at an average number in a range of from 3 to 8 ones of the fluorophore group per antibody molecule of the antibody molecules.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the average number is in a range of from 3 to 7.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous liquid medium comprises a buffered solution.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the buffered solution is a phosphate buffered solution.

5. A fluorescent antibody stain for staining virus-size particles having a target epitope, the fluorescent antibody stain comprising:

antibody molecules targeted to bind, directly or indirectly, with the target epitope;

multiple ones of a fluorophore group attached to the antibody molecules, the fluorophore group comprising a fluorophore; and

an average of from 3 to 8 ones of the fluorophore group attached per antibody molecule of the antibody molecules.

6. The fluorescent antibody stain of claim 5 , wherein the fluorophore group comprises a dye molecule conjugated with a said antibody molecule.

7. The fluorescent antibody stain of claim 6 , wherein the average is from 3 to 7 ones of the fluorophore group attached per antibody molecule of the antibody molecules.

8. The fluorescent antibody stain of claim 7 , comprising a buffered solution at a pH within a range of from pH 7 to pH 8.
