Abstract

Systems, apparatuses, and methods are discussed herein for an endoscope. The endoscope has a distal tip with an oblique portion and a flat portion, the oblique portion defines a plane that forms an angle between and including 20 and 40 degrees to a central axis of the endoscope. A related sheath may have similar features at the distal tip.

Claims (26)

1. An endoscope comprising:

an elongated shaft defining a central axis and a distal tip, the distal tip of the elongated shaft including a first portion defining an area lying within a first plane that forms a non-perpendicular angle relative to the central axis of the elongated shaft, a second portion defining a second plane that is perpendicular to the central axis of the elongated shaft, and first and second transition areas interconnecting the first and second portions of the distal tip of the elongated shaft on opposed first and second sides of the distal tip of the elongated shaft, respectively;

a first channel extending through the elongated shaft, the first channel defining a distal tip including an angled portion terminating coplanarly with the first portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft and fully occupying the area, a straight portion terminating coplanarly with the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft and extending transversely across the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft between the first and second sides of the distal tip of the elongated shaft, and first and second transition areas interconnecting the angled and straight portions of the distal tip of the first channel; and

a visualization conduit extending through the elongated shaft outside of the first channel, the visualization conduit optically exposed coplanarly with the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft such that a viewing angle through the visualization conduit is parallel to the central axis.

2. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the first plane forms an angle of from 20 degrees to 40 degrees relative to the central axis.

3. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the first plane forms an angle of from 30 degrees to 34 degrees relative to the central axis.

4. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the first plane forms an angle of about 32 degrees relative to the central axis.

5. The endoscope according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one light fiber extending through the elongated shaft outside of the first channel.

6. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft defines a curvature.

7. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft defines a curvature.

8. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second transition areas of the distal tip of the elongated shaft define curvatures.

9. The endoscope according to claim 1 , wherein the elongated shaft defines a largest outside dimension measured perpendicularly to the central axis, and wherein the elongated shaft defines a further outside dimension measured perpendicularly to the central axis and perpendicularly to the largest outside dimension, the further outside dimension smaller than the largest outside dimension.

10. The endoscope according to claim 9 , wherein each of the first and second transition areas of the distal tip of the elongated shaft defines a radius of curvature of from 8% to 20% of the largest outside dimension.

11. An endoscope comprising:

an elongated shaft defining a central axis and a distal tip, the distal tip of the elongated shaft including a first portion that terminates to define a planar area disposed at a non-perpendicular angle relative to the central axis of the elongated shaft, a second portion that terminates at a perpendicular angle relative to the central axis of the elongated shaft, and first and second transition areas interconnecting the first and second portions of the distal tip of the elongated shaft;

a first channel extending through the elongated shaft, the first channel defining a distal tip terminating coextensively with the distal tip of the elongated shaft, the distal tip of the first channel fully occupying the planar area of the first portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft and part of the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft; and

a second channel, extending through the elongated shaft outside of the first channel, the second channel occupying part of the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft.

12. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the distal tip of the elongated shaft defines space within the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft not occupied by the first channel or the second channel.

13. The endoscope according to claim 12 , further comprising at least one light fiber extending through the space of the distal tip of the elongated shaft.

14. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the second channel is a visualization conduit optically exposed coplanarly with the second portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft such that a viewing angle through the visualization conduit is parallel to the central axis.

15. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the first and second transition areas of the distal tip of the elongated shaft define curvatures.

16. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft terminates at an angle of from 20 degrees to 40 degrees relative to the central axis.

17. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the distal tip of the elongated shaft terminates at an angle of from 30 degrees to 34 degrees relative to the central axis.

18. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the first channel includes a straight portion and a curved portion.

19. The endoscope according to claim 18 , wherein the second channel defines a circular cross-sectional configuration.

20. The endoscope according to claim 11 , wherein the elongated shaft defines a circular or non-circular oval cross-sectional configuration.
