Abstract

A security apparatus for a portable electronic device having an aperture includes a lock mechanism having a lock cylinder and a cam member. The lock cylinder is configured to be rotated by a key. The cam member is coupled to the lock cylinder for rotation with the lock cylinder. The cam member has a slot. The security apparatus also includes an engagement mechanism having a first finger, a second finger, and a plunger. The first finger and the second finger are configured to be inserted into the aperture of the portable electronic device. The plunger is positioned between the first finger and the second finger and has a cam follower positioned within the slot of the cam member. As the cam member is rotated by the lock cylinder, the plunger pushes the first finger and the second finger apart from each other to engage the portable electronic device.

Claims (25)

1. A security apparatus for a portable electronic device, the portable electronic device having an aperture, the aperture having a first ledge and a second ledge, the security apparatus comprising:

an engagement mechanism including a first finger having a first engagement surface and a second finger having a second engagement surface, the first engagement surface extending outward and away from the second finger, the second engagement surface extending outward and away from the first finger, the first finger and the second finger rotatable about a shared axis, the first finger and the second finger configured to be inserted into the aperture of the portable electronic device, the engagement mechanism movable between a first position, in which the first and second fingers disengage the first ledge and the second ledge of the portable electronic device, and a second position, in which the first engagement surface of the first finger engages the first ledge of the portable electronic device and the second engagement surface of the second finger engages the second ledge of the portable electronic device,

wherein the first finger and the second finger only partially overlap while in the first position such that the first engagement surface is located outside a periphery of the second finger and the second engagement surface is located outside a periphery of the first finger,

wherein the first engagement surface is transverse to the second engagement surface in the first position, and wherein an entirety of the first engagement surface is coplanar with an entirety of the second engagement surface in the second position.

2. The security apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in the second position, a follower engages the first and second fingers such that the distance between the first and second engagement surfaces is increased relative to the first position.

3. The security apparatus of claim 2 , wherein, in the first position, the follower is disengaged from the first and second fingers.

4. The security apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising an elastomeric ring configured to bias the engagement mechanism to the first position.

5. The security apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the follower overcomes the bias of the elastomeric ring when the engagement mechanism is in the second position.

6. The security apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the elastomeric ring engages both of the first finger and the second finger to bias the engagement mechanism to the first position.

7. The security apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a body, wherein first portions of the first and second fingers are located within the body, and wherein second portions of the first and second fingers extend outward from the body through an opening in the body.

8. The security apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a lock mechanism configured to selectively prohibit the engagement mechanism from transitioning from the second position to the first position.

9. The security apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a cable mount configured to receive a flexible cable for securing the engagement mechanism to an immovable object.

10. A security apparatus for a portable electronic device, the portable electronic device having an aperture, the aperture having a first ledge and a second ledge, the security apparatus comprising:

an engagement mechanism including a first finger extending from a first end to a second end and having a first engagement surface located at the first end of the first finger, a second finger extending from a first end to a second end and having a second engagement surface located at the first end of the second finger, and a follower configured to selectively engage the second ends of the first and second fingers, the first engagement surface extending outward and away from the second finger, the second engagement surface extending outward and away from the first finger, the first finger being rotatable about a rotational axis located between the first and second ends of the first finger, the second finger being rotatable about a rotational axis located between the first and second ends of the second finger, the first finger and the second finger configured to be inserted into the aperture of the portable electronic device, the engagement mechanism movable between a first position, in which the first and second fingers disengage the first ledge and the second ledge of the portable electronic device, and a second position, in which the first engagement surface of the first finger engages the first ledge of the portable electronic device and the second engagement surface of the second finger engages the second ledge of the portable electronic device,

wherein the first finger and the second finger only partially overlap while in the first position such that the first engagement surface is located outside a periphery of the second finger and the second engagement surface is located outside a periphery of the first finger,

wherein the first engagement surface is transverse to the second engagement surface in the first position, and wherein an entirety of the first engagement surface is coplanar with an entirety of the second engagement surface in the second position.

11. The security apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the rotational axes of the first and second fingers are coaxial such that the first finger and the second finger are rotatable about a shared axis.

12. The security apparatus of claim 10 , wherein, in the second position, the follower engages the first and second fingers such that the distance between the first and second engagement surfaces is increased relative to the first position.

13. The security apparatus of claim 10 , wherein, in the first position, the follower is disengaged from the first and second fingers.

14. The security apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising an elastomeric ring configured to bias the engagement mechanism to the first position.

15. The security apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the follower overcomes the bias of the elastomeric ring when the engagement mechanism is in the second position.

16. The security apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the elastomeric ring engages both of the first finger and the second finger to bias the engagement mechanism to the first position.

17. The security apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a body, wherein the follower is located within the body, wherein first portions of the first and second fingers are located within the body, and wherein second portions of the first and second fingers extend outward from the body through an opening in the body.

18. The security apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a lock mechanism configured to selectively prohibit the engagement mechanism from transitioning from the second position to the first position.

19. The security apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a cable mount configured to receive a flexible cable for securing the engagement mechanism to an immovable object.
