Abstract

A method can include sensing one or more materials of a graphite-based anode electrode for a lithium-ion battery that includes silicon; and characterizing the silicon content in the graphite-based anode electrode where, for example, distribution of the silicon in the graphite-based anode electrode may be characterized.

Claims (28)

1 . A method comprising:

sensing one or more materials of a graphite-based anode electrode for a lithium-ion battery that comprises silicon, wherein the sensing comprises capturing imagery of electrode material for the graphite-based anode electrode, wherein the imagery comprises infrared imagery, and wherein the sensing comprises one or more of heating and cooling the electrode material; and

based on the sensing, characterizing the silicon content in the graphite-based anode electrode.

2 .- 5 . (canceled)

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensing comprises removing a coated protective film from a coated strip of electrode material for the graphite-based anode electrode.

7 . The method of claim 6 , comprising dissolving a portion of the coated protected film in a solvent to generate a specimen and analyzing the specimen using analytical equipment.

8 .- 10 . (canceled)

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein characterizing the silicon content comprises analyzing the imagery for a distribution of the silicon with respect to graphite.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein characterizing the silicon content comprises determining a distribution of the silicon with respect to the graphite.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensing comprises sensing thermal stress in at least an electrode material of the graphite-based anode electrode.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the thermal stress is indicative of a distribution of the silicon in graphite of the graphite-based anode electrode.

15 . A quality assessment system comprising:

an infrared camera for capturing imagery of electrode material for an electrode of a lithium-ion battery;

a heat source; and

a controller that controls the heat source and the infrared camera and that processes the imagery to characterize distribution of a material in the electrode material.

16 . The quality assessment system of claim 15 , wherein the material comprises silicon.

17 . The quality assessment system of claim 16 , wherein the controller instructs the heat source to heat the electrode material and to capture the imagery during heating of the electrode material.

18 . The quality assessment system of claim 15 , wherein the controller characterizes the distribution of the material by identifying presence of instances of the material in the imagery.

19 . The quality assessment system of claim 15 , wherein the controller generates output for process equipment.

20 . The quality assessment system of claim 19 , wherein the output instructs the process equipment to adjust at least one process parameter related to dispersal of the material with respect to a conveyed substrate.

21 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the sensing comprises sensing the coated protective film.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the coated protective film comprises a piece of tape coated with the electrode material.

23 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensing comprises determining a distribution of silicon in the electrode material based on differences in thermal properties responsive to at least one of the one or more of heating and cooling the electrode material.

24 . A method comprising:

sensing one or more materials of a graphite-based anode electrode for a lithium-ion battery that comprises silicon, wherein the sensing comprises dissolving and sonicating a portion of the graphite-based anode electrode in a solvent; and

based on the sensing, characterizing the silicon content in the graphite-based anode electrode.

25 . The method of claim 24 , comprising generating a specimen and analyzing the specimen using analytical equipment.

26 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the solvent comprises one or more of water and NMP.
