Abstract

A roofing shingle includes a head lap and at least one solar cell. The head lap includes at least one handle located between a first end and a second end of the shingle and proximate to a first edge thereof. The at least one handle includes at least one cutout and a gripping portion. The at least one cutout is sized and shaped to receive an external object to facilitate transporting the shingle by a user.

Claims (57)

1. A roofing shingle, comprising:

a first layer having:

a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first edge extending from the first end to the second end, and a second edge opposite the first edge and extending from the first end to the second end,

a first portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the first edge of the first layer, and

a second portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the second edge of the first layer, and

a second layer,

wherein the second layer is positioned above the first layer,

wherein the first portion includes at least one handle located between the first end and the second end and proximate to the first edge,

wherein the first layer forms a continuous flat surface between the at least one handle and the second edge,

wherein the at least one handle includes at least one cutout.

2. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cutout extends from a top surface of the roofing shingle, through the first and second layers, to a bottom surface of the roofing shingle.

3. The roofing shingle of claim 2 , wherein the at least one cutout includes a flap.

4. The roofing shingle of claim 3 , wherein the flap is configured to move between at least a first position and a second position.

5. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cutout includes a shape selected from the group consisting of a rectangle, a square, a rounded rectangle, an ellipse, a circle, a triangle, and a polygon.

6. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one cutout includes a plurality of cutouts.

7. The roofing shingle of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the at least one handle is moveable between a retracted position and an extended position.

8. A system comprising:

a roof deck,

a plurality of roofing shingles located above the roof deck,

wherein each roofing shingle of the plurality of roofing shingles comprising:

a first layer having:

a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first edge extending from the first end to the second end, and a second edge opposite the first edge and extending from the first end to the second end,

a first portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the first edge of the first layer, and

a second portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the second edge of the first layer, and

a second layer,

wherein the second layer is positioned above the first layer,

wherein the first portion includes at least one handle located between the first end and the second end and proximate to the first edge,

wherein the first layer forms a continuous flat surface between the at least one handle and the second edge, and

wherein the at least one handle includes at least one cutout, and

wherein at least one of the plurality of roofing shingles comprises a solar shingle.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout extends through the first and second layers.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout includes a flap.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein each flap is configured to move between at least a first position and a second position.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout includes a shape selected from the group consisting of a rectangle, a square, a rounded rectangle, an ellipse, a circle, a triangle, and a polygon.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout includes a plurality of cutouts.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein a portion of each handle of the at least one handle is moveable between a retracted position and an extended position.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the solar shingle further comprises:

at least one solar cell located above the second portion of the first layer.

16. A method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of roofing shingles,

wherein each roofing shingle of the plurality of roofing shingles comprising:

a first layer having:

a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first edge extending from the first end to the second end, and a second edge opposite the first edge and extending from the first end to the second end,

a first portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the first edge of the first layer, and

a second portion extending from the first end to the second end adjacent the second edge of the first layer, and

a second layer,

wherein the second layer is positioned above the first layer,

wherein the first portion includes at least one handle located between the first end and the second end and proximate to the first edge,

wherein the first layer forms a continuous flat surface between the at least one handle and the second edge, and

wherein the at least one handle includes at least one cutout, and

wherein at least one of the plurality of roofing shingles comprises a solar shingle, and

attaching each of the plurality of roofing shingles to a roof deck.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout extends through the first and second layers.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout includes a shape selected from the group consisting of a rectangle, a square, a rounded rectangle, an ellipse, a circle, a triangle, and a polygon.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the solar shingle further comprises:

at least one solar cell located above the second portion of the first layer.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein each cutout of the at least one cutout includes a flap movable between at least two positions.
