Abstract

A biometric token is generated for a user and provided to a user-operated device. A pre-staged transaction is defined by a user and the user supplies the token for association with the pre-staged transaction. Subsequently, a user visits a transaction terminal and a new candidate token is generated from biometric attributes of the user. The candidate token is matched to the token associated with pre-staged transaction to authenticate the user and the pre-staged transaction is processed at the transaction terminal as a completed transaction.

Claims (37)

1. A method, comprising:

associating a token with a pre-staged transaction defined by a user, wherein associating further includes obtaining biometric measurements from the user, wherein a biometric type corresponds to the biometric measurements, and hashing the biometric measurements to obtain a value that links to a transaction identifier assigned to the pre-staged transaction;

providing the transaction identifier and the token to the user;

identifying the user at a terminal;

providing the transaction identifier for the pre-staged transaction and the token to the terminal; and

instructing the terminal to capture biometric features of the user at the terminal, calculate current biometric measurements from the biometric features based on the token type, calculate a current value by hashing the current biometric measurements, compare the current value against the value associated with the token, authenticate the user for the pre-staged transaction based on comparison of the current value against the value, and process the pre-staged transaction on behalf of the user when the current value comports with the value of the token.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, removing the token upon confirmation that the pre-staged transaction was processed by the terminal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying further includes receiving notification that the user authenticated to a user account at the terminal and matching the user account of the user to the pre-staged transaction.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein associating further includes interacting with a user device of the user to define the token and the pre-staged transaction.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein interacting further includes obtaining initial biometric features captured by the user device, calculating the biometric measurements associated with the initial biometric features, hashing the biometric measurements to the value, and generating the token as the value.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein generating further includes calculating facial feature measurements from an image provided by a camera of the user device as the initial biometric features and retaining the facial feature measurements as the biometric measurements.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein associating further includes authenticating the user to a user account before the associating.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein authenticating further includes receiving the biometric type as a selection made by the user for use with the token from a plurality of biometrics types presented to the user.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein receiving further includes activating a peripheral on a user device based on the biometric type, receiving peripheral data captured by the peripheral of the user, calculate the biometric measurements of features identified within the peripheral data, hashing the biometric measurements to the value, and retaining the value and the biometric type as the token.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein activating further includes activating a camera of the user device based on the biometric type, wherein the peripheral data is an image of a face of the user captured by the camera.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein activating further includes activating a microphone of the user device based on the biometric type, wherein the peripheral data is audio of the user captured by the microphone.

12. A method, comprising:

authenticating, by a terminal, a user to a user account for a transaction;

receiving, by the terminal, a pre-staged transaction identifier for a pre-staged transaction that is associated with the user account and a biometric token associated with the pre-staged transaction, wherein the biometric token comprises a biometric type and a value representing a hash of biometric measurements for biometric features of the user;

capturing, by the terminal, candidate biometric features of the user based on the biometric type associated with to the biometric token;

generating, by the terminal, a candidate biometric token based on the candidate biometric features by calculating candidate biometric measurements from the candidate biometric features and calculating a candidate hash from the candidate biometric measurements; and

processing, by the terminal, the pre-staged transaction as the transaction when the candidate hash comports with the hash associated with the biometric token.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein receiving further includes obtaining the pre-staged transaction details for the pre-staged transaction based on the pre-staged transaction identifier.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein capturing further includes selectively activating a peripheral of the terminal to capture the candidate biometric features based on the biometric type.

15. The method of claim 12 further comprising, removing, by the terminal, the biometric token, the candidate biometric token, and the candidate biometric features when the pre-staged transaction is processed by the terminal or when the pre-staged transaction is denied by the terminal.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising, sending, by the terminal, a confirmation when the pre-staged transaction is processed by the terminal for a server to remove the biometric token and its association with the user account.

17. A system, comprising:

a server that comprises a processor and non-transitory memory;

the non-transitory memory comprises instructions; and

the processor executes the instructions from the non-transitory memory causing the processor to perform operations comprising:

obtaining biometric features from a user to associate with a pre-staged transaction of the user and an account of the user based on a selection of the user of a biometric type from a plurality of biometric types presented to the user;

taking measurements from the biometric features;

generating a biometric token based on the measurements by hashing the measurements to a value and associating the value and the biometric type selected by the user;

receiving a notification that the user is at a terminal and has authenticated to the account of the user;

sending the biometric token and pre-staged transaction details associated with the pre-staged transaction to the terminal; and

instructing the terminal to capture candidate biometric features of the user based on the biometric type associated with the biometric token, to generate a candidate biometric token based on hashing candidate biometric measurements for the candidate biometric features to a candidate value, and to authenticate that the candidate value comports with the value of the biometric token and when the candidate value does comport with the value of the biometric token to process the pre-staged transaction details for the user at the terminal.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the terminal is an automated teller machine, a self-service terminal, a point-of-sale terminal, a kiosk, or a teller-operated terminal.
