Abstract

A method includes causing display of events that correspond to search results of a search query in a table. The table includes rows representing events comprising data items of event attributes, columns forming cells with the row, the columns representing respective event attributes, and interactive regions corresponding to one or more data items of the displayed data items. The method also includes in response to the user selecting a designated interactive region, causing display of a list of options, each displayed option corresponding to an interface template for composing query commands, and based on the user selecting an option in the displayed list of options, causing one or more commands to be added to the search query, the one or more commands composed based on the one or more data items that corresponds to the designated interactive region according to instructions of the interface template of the selected option.

Claims (35)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving a user selection of an interactive region corresponding to a data item of an event in a table including a set of events, the event corresponding to a portion of raw machine data associated with a time stamp;

based on the user selection of the interactive region corresponding to the data item of the event in the table including the set of events, providing, for display, a plurality of selectable options textually describing a set of commands for composing a search query based on the data item corresponding to the interactive region, the plurality of selectable options corresponding to the user selected interactive region in the table; and

based on a user selection of a selectable option textually describing a command, using the command to compose the search query that corresponds to events in the table including the user selected interactive region.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the command comprises a command identifier that identifies the command and one or more command elements of the command.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of selectable options comprises a first option when a first interactive region is selected and comprises a second option when a second interactive region is selected.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of selectable options is provided, via a graphical user interface, in an option menu.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one option of the plurality of selectable options is based on a determination of a data type associated with the data item.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one option of the plurality of selectable options is based on a source of the data item corresponding to the interactive region.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one option of the plurality of selectable options comprises a form-based option having a modifiable form element.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the command is sequentially added to the end of the search query.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the command is added to the search query in proper syntax form.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the command is based on an event attribute corresponding to the interactive region.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after composing the search query, receiving a request to modify the command; and

modifying the command in the search query based on user input.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, based on the user selection of the interactive region:

extracting a value of the data item; and

determining at least one of the plurality of selectable options to display based on the value.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the using the command to compose the search query automatically causes a set of events displayed in the table to be updated to correspond to results of the composed search query comprising the command.

14. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media having instructions stored thereon, the instructions, when executed by a processor of a computing device, to cause the computing device to perform a method comprising:

receiving a user selection of an interactive region corresponding to a data item of an event in a table including a set of events, the event corresponding to a portion of raw machine data associated with a time stamp;

based on the user selection of the interactive region corresponding to the data item of the event in the table including the set of events, providing, for display, a plurality of selectable options textually describing a set of commands for composing a search query based on the data item corresponding to the interactive region, the plurality of selectable options corresponding to the user selected interactive region in the table; and

based on a user selection of a selectable option textually describing a command, using the command to compose the search query that corresponds to events in the table including the user selected interactive region.

15. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein the command comprises a command identifier that identifies the command and one or more command elements of the command.

16. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of selectable options comprises a first option when a first interactive region is selected and comprises a second option when a second interactive region is selected.

17. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of selectable options is provided, via a graphical user interface, in an option menu.

18. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of selectable options is based on a determination of a data type associated with the data item.

19. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of selectable options comprises a form-based option having a modifiable form element.

20. A computer-implemented system comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory having instructions stored thereon, the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, to cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

receiving a user selection of an interactive region corresponding to a data item with of an event in a table including a set of events, the event corresponding to a portion of raw machine data associated with a time stamp;

based on the user selection of the interactive region corresponding to the data item of the event in the table including the set of events, providing, for display, a plurality of selectable options textually describing a set of commands for composing a search query based on the data item corresponding to the interactive region, the plurality of selectable options corresponding to the user selected interactive region in the table; and

based on a user selection of a selectable option textually describing a command, using the command to compose the search query that corresponds to events in the table including the user selected interactive region.
