Abstract

A device for dispensing items includes a cabinet, and a drawer within the cabinet. The drawer includes one or more compartments for storing items and a cooling system within the drawer. The cooling system is configured to maintain the one or more compartments in the drawer at a temperature below the temperature of the environment surrounding the cabinet. The drawer further includes thermal insulation at sides of the drawer and thermal insulation beneath the one or more compartments. The refrigeration system may be a thermoelectric cooling system.

Claims (23)

1 . A drawer configured for mounting in a cabinet, the drawer comprising:

an outer shell;

insulation defining a climate-controlled interior of the drawer; and

a cooling system disposed within the drawer and configured to maintain interior of the drawer at a temperature below the temperature of an environment surrounding the drawer, the cooling system comprising a fan configured cause airflow inside of the drawer and between the insulation of the drawer and the outer shell.

2 . The drawer of claim 1 , wherein the cooling system comprises a thermoelectric cooling system disposed in a side wall of the drawer.

3 . The drawer of claim 2 , further comprising a plurality of compartments for storing items.

4 . The drawer of claim 3 , further comprising a plurality of lids covering the plurality of compartments.

5 . The drawer of claim 4 , further comprising a plurality of actuators coupled to the plurality of lids, the actuators configured for locking and unlocking the plurality of compartments.

6 . The drawer of claim 5 , further comprising an electrical interface for receiving power and control signals, wherein the actuators lock and unlock the plurality of compartments in response to control signals received via the electrical interface.

7 . The drawer of claim 4 , wherein the insulation extends underneath the plurality of compartments.

8 . The drawer of claim 7 , wherein the thermoelectric cooling system is configured to circulate cooled air in the interior of the drawer.

9 . The drawer of claim 8 , wherein at least some of the plurality of compartments are defined in part by perforated walls that permit circulating air to pass through the walls and through the compartments.

10 . The drawer of claim 9 , wherein lids of at least some of the compartments that are defined in part by perforated walls include descending ribs that protrude into the compartments so defined when the lids are closed.

11 . The drawer of claim 10 , wherein the ribs prevent complete filing of the compartments.

12 . The drawer of claim 9 , wherein the fan comprises a hot side fan and a cold side fan.

13 . The drawer of claim 4 , wherein the thermoelectric cooling system includes a closed cooling loop containing a heat transfer fluid.

14 . The drawer of claim 13 , wherein at least some of the plurality of compartments are defined in part by walls without perforations.

15 . The drawer of claim 13 , wherein the heat transfer fluid is carbon dioxide maintained at a pressure such that its boiling point is between 2° C. and 8° C.

16 . The drawer of claim 15 , wherein the heat transfer fluid is moved through the closed cooling loop via gravity and phase changes.

17 . The drawer of claim 1 , wherein the fan comprises a first fan for causing airflow between the insulation of the drawer and the outer shell and a second fan for exhausting heat from the cooling system.

18 . The drawer of claim 1 , wherein the cooling system comprises a refrigeration system.

19 . The drawer of claim 18 , wherein the refrigeration system comprises a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator.

20 . The drawer of claim 19 , further comprising a temperature probe within the drawer, wherein the temperature probe provides a signal to a computerized controller indicating a temperature within the drawer.
